Hallmark maintained a regional sales office in Rye, NY and wanted a training store in proximity such that newly hired account managers could have intensive retail training as part of their on-boarding, It was my responsibility to provide that hands on boot camp including retail business management, product knowledge, customer service, store merchandising and direct selling on the store floor - with real customers! As a regional store I was also given the privilege of having Hallmark Executives from the Kansas City headquarters come for similar training. I cross trained with the Hallmark sales team, met prospective store owners to provide insight into their viability as retailers, traveled throughout the NY/CT sales territory to provide in store technology installations on Point of Sale terminals including setting up the software and training of store owners, managers and staff. To maintain credibility within that community, I had to learn retail and achieve the highest standards as did my staff - they had to meet the same standards whether I was there or not. Payroll to sales ratios, inventory control and sales goals were among my assessed criteria separate from my training goals - managed by two different divisional managers. My assistant manager and I created an amazing team of associates that took on this daunting mission at slightly more than minimum wage. I personally scored 5 consecutive perfect Secret Shopper Service scores, but I am more proud that my staff received similar scores. In-store training topics (retailers came in to my operation for training while my store was open for business) included: retail management, personnel practices, all major product launches, and loss prevention. I also had the privilege of assisting in vetting new training store managers as the program expanded across the country. Show less
