Ruth Cano is a researcher and educator with four years of teaching experience and eight years of professional research experience encompassing the areas of economics, entrepreneurship, marketing, psychology, and information systems. Her personal research has focused on corporate finance, behavioral finance, and risk. She has collected data using large data sets, electronic survey software, computer-assisted telephone interviews, and in-person interviews. Her broad research experience has allowed her to become familiar with various research methods and data analysis software packages (SPSS, STATA, SAS). She is comfortable performing research alone and with collaborators, from design and hypothesis development to results and final reports. She also has experience managing multiple research groups and projects. She is passionate about education, learning, and teaching. She has experience teaching, mentoring, and tutoring students of different ages (preschool, 3rd grade, 5th grade, high school, undergraduate/graduate). She gained this experience from serving two terms as an AmeriCorps Member (working at 3 elementary schools), assisting college professors, and completing a student teaching experience at a high school. She worked for STISD Virtual Academy teaching technology and business courses to students in grades 6-12 for two years. She currently teaches college courses to high school students through a dual enrollment partnership with South Texas College and Vanguard Academy.She holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Brownsville and a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Psychology and a minor in Global Health, Culture and Society from Emory University. She also completed two years of Finance PhD course work at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Furthermore, she has a certificate from Harvard Law School’s Labor and Worklife Program, where she received training and worked as a paid intern for two summers. Also, she is bilingual in English and Spanish, with excellent reading and writing abilities. Lastly, she has a Standard Teaching Certificate from the state of Texas in Business & Finance 6-12 and also in Technology Applications EC-12.While she comes from a small city, she has lived and worked in large cities and counties (Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles, Orange County, D.C., Detroit, New York City), so she is comfortable in all environments. She is very flexible and has held positions that ranged from no-travel-required to 90%-travel-required. She is deeply committed to constant self-improvement.
