About Ruth Lopez

With over 19 years of experience in immigration law and advocacy, I am passionate about serving and empowering immigrant and refugee communities in Illinois. As the Senior Immigration Fellow at the State of Illinois, I helped coordinate the state's efforts to provide legal, social, and economic support to immigrants and refugees, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In my previous roles, I managed the Legal Protection Fund program at the National Immigrant Justice Center, where I oversaw the provision of legal services to thousands of immigrants in Chicago and beyond. I also represented clients in immigration proceedings, developed training content, and conducted community outreach and education. I have a strong track record of building and maintaining relationships with diverse stakeholders, from grassroots organizations to government agencies. I have a J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law, and I am fluent in Spanish. I am honored to receive multiple awards for my work, including the 2020 Latina Lawyer of the Year from the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois, and the Illinois Institute of Technology’s 2022 International Award of Merit.
