About Robert Decker
I began my career in a procurement engineering role for a major operation at Philips Respironics (now Philips Sleep & Respiratory Care) where I was exposed to the importance of cutting cost without sacrificing quality. The very first lesson I was taught there has become a core principle for my career: Be a sponge. Soak up as much knowledge as you can. Don't be afraid to ask questions. I took this mindset with me to AK Steel in 2017. I spent my first year and a half there soaking up as much knowledge about operations, team management, and the steel industry. I have since bounced around this mill learning all I could about our process and our place in the supply chain not only as the leading automotive supplier, but also as the only GOES supplier in North America. Each position has taught me a brand new skillset along with new parts of the process. Over the course of five years, I've been fortunate enough to learn our process front to back, from raw materials and charge creation, to EAF melting and refining, all the way through flattening and coating. I've also had tremendous opportunity to network and make connections with various outside companies that provide services and products to us. There have been several times where those connections have been called upon to help us solve a problem, find ways to cut cost without sacrificing quality, and generally educate me about what they do and what other markets they are in. Some of my interests are the stock/metals market, sports, and music.

Met with suppliers on a near daily basis to find ways to reduce/eliminate cost, quality failures, line stops, safety hazards, and environmental events through design and material improvements, new products, and trial and error. Formed new supplier relationships. Maintained and improved current supplier relationships. Investigated quality failures, safety incidents, unit stops, and other events using root cause analysis.Initiated, managed, and completed several lengthy projects including inspecting, removing, repairing, and replacing a state regulated chromic acid tank, stripping the interior shell and installing a new type of insulation to improve thermal properties on the flattening and coating line furnace, the removal, tear down, rebuild, and reinstallation of line critical machinery including side trimming heads, coiler reel, payoff reels, and the production build, structural repairs, and installation of a new wringer roll stand and hydraulic system.Engineered several line improvements including changing the expand/contract mechanism on our reel heads to improve the life and reliability, changing the punching material of a stitcher to extend the life by 75%, and changing the carbide grade of our slitter knives to increase life by 40%. Cut projected maintenance cost for batch annealing furnaces by $400k by investigating heat exchanger failures with a new vendor.Developed and implemented a location system for our new Oracle inventory system rollout.
