Project 1 – Understanding the Impact of Informal Use of Untreated Wastewater and Faecal Sludge in Agriculture on Human Health and EnvironmentSpearheaded by the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), in collaboration with Biome Environmental Trust, Ladakh Ecological Development Group (LEDeG) and National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), the project aimed to study the existing sanitation behaviour of those residing in extreme cold climatic areas in the Trans-Himalayan ranges and their practices' potentially adverse health impacts. • Present as on-ground point of contact in Leh and Kargil in Union Territory of Ladakh and Bansberia in West Bengal conducting over 80 interviews of farmers, sanitation workers, government administrators and medical officers, of which about 50 were recorded, transcribed.• Developed the questionnaire that was used in the interviews.• Collected samples of crops, fresh produce, soil, faecal sludge, wastewater, drinking water, compost and manure, and shipped them to the labs in Bengaluru• Showcased our learnings in the form of a report and presentationProject 2 – WASH Facility ToolkitMy next project involved documenting WASH facilities for sanitation workers in South Asia, including India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. While engaged in this task, I used the learnings that I gained about the appalling condition of sanitation workers to compile a report on the same and pitched the WASH facility (also known as Lounge n’ Locker Facility, Resting Facility etc.) as a possible intervention to alleviate and ameliorate some stresses faced by the workers.• Created the first draft of the WASH facility toolkit (Edit: The Toolkit was been accepted and published in association with the Government of Karnataka, as of 2023)• Edit: The draft formed the basis on which multiple designs were executed resulting in a 400% rise in the number of WASH facilities from 2021 to 2023.
