Developing and managing research programme in occupational health and safety. This involves identifying research needs, liaising with other funders, overseeing the commissioning process and orchestrating relations between the funded projects. Its objective is to generate evidence that can be used by members and by IOSH in advocating effective health and safety interventions for the benefit of workers and the wider public.

Consultant on issues relating to the social and cultural impact on ICT, particularly privacy, organization and public engagement. Collaborating on projects examining digital futures in energy and transport and supervising PhD students on innovation in organizations and ICT and urban ecology.

I was initially appointed to oversee the merger of departments offering teaching in sociology, social policy and social work into a single organizational unit and managed this as a large teaching-focussed department from 1991 until 1996. Member of group advising on bioethical aspects of a strategic corporate issue.

I worked at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, successively as a Research Officer, Senior Research Officer and Research Fellow. I joined initially as part of a team investigating agency decision making in child protection, but subsequently worked on projects examining divorce mediation, asbestos disease litigation, medical negligence and civil justice procedure.

I joined the MRC Medical Sociology Unit as a research student in 1974 and wrote my PhD from a participant observation study of the social organization of health visitor training. I subsequently carried out a qualitative interview study of the everyday lives of physically disabled young people.
