All research was conducted as part of the Tufts University Data Intensive Studies Center's (DISC) COVID-19 seed grant on the Real Time Forecast for COVID-19 Laboratory Confirmed Cases. My work included:- Developed and refined analytic techniques that applied Kolmogorov-Zurbenko (KZ) adaptive filters to examine outbreak signatures of SARS-CoV-2 in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA. - This technique, involving smoothing average curves, provides a data-driven approach to identify critical points (i.e., onset, peak, and resolution) and critical periods (i.e., acceleration, deceleration, steady state) of outbreak waves- Applications of this technique offer opportunities for real-time surveillance and near-term forecasting of emerging outbreak threats. We also applied this analytical technique for describing and comparing cholera outbreak signatures across governorates during the Yemeni Civil War.
Research Assistant
All research was conducted as part of a research grant (Hybrid Forecasting Competition) through Tufts University Friedman School, which was funded by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity. My work included:- Applied time series methods to develop weekly forecast models that described, explained, and predicted potential infectious disease outbreaks and humanitarian emergencies worldwide using publicly available data- Conducted frequent forecasts to assess influenza outbreaks within Latin America, enteric infection outbreaks within the United States, cholera outbreaks within Yemen, and famine emergencies within Somalia- Designed educational training material to teach novice forecasters how to conduct effective, reliable, accurate, complex, valuable, clear, and adaptive forecasts for early warning surveillance systems- Predicted the pandemic potential of Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and geographic transmission trajectory from Southern China in July 2019 prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/national-security/u-s-intel-agencies-warned-rising-risk-outbreak-coronavirus-n1144891
