This is an extension of my and my wife's personal project, Ripples. We maintain, optimize, and innovate upon our off-grid house and homestead. We have no grid hard links to the house: no sewer line (managed via a graywater-filtration garden and separating toilet), no water (rainwater catchment and storage), no power lines (energy solar-generated and stored in batteries), and no physical Internet line (5G unlimited hotspot). We mostly generate and maintain all utilities onsite, with minimal support from generators and waste management (black material hauled offsite, eventually to be composted). Due to the nature and placement of our structure (very small, raised off the ground, in the middle of a field for solar gain, on leased conservation land), we face unique challenges. As the main technical off-grid systems manager and maintainer, my creativity, tenacity, fortitude, skill-acquisition, remediation, and execution capabilities are often pushed quite hard. I crave and cherish the ways in which this life has shaped me. I have learned, and continue to learn, my limits, how to skillfully navigate them, and how to thrive and execute on meaningful goals despite pushing up against my limits time and time again. I use the technical (both direct and systems developmental) abilities honed in my paid work to think expansively, with a vigorous and passionate explorer's heart fueled by the endless pursuit of artful efficiency. I use my background in and passion for communication to guide me productively through the internal complexities such a journey places upon me, and to hopefully convey with clarity the nature of this journey to those I encounter.

This is my and my partner's "off hours" life project. We are exploring the most efficient ways to make a personal-scale difference, and do our conservation work and systems development from a tiny house on wheels on 169 acres of conservation land. This project involves:- Developing and maintaining a Wordpress-hosted website, makeripples.org, where we will host an educational center focused on guides and unpacking the best practices we've researched for conservation, life skills, entrepreneurship, and many other topics.- Assisting my partner with developing the technical and numerical side of her Greeting Card, Illustration, and Writing businesses. - Helping define the scope and realistic goals of this far-ranging project, and bring it into reality.- Maintenance of a tiny house on wheels, fully off-grid (electricity, water, and sewer), and optimization of the various systems we rely upon.

- Maintain the technical infrastructure at ONF, including servers, point-of-sale / store-management software, workstations, and various other devices / systems- Build, deploy, and maintain Dell physical server, SAN, and networking hardware from the ground up- Gain a strong working knowledge of and maintain Windows Server (active directory, GPOs, DHCP, DNS, etc.), Microsoft Exchange, virtualization (updating hypervisor, deploying new VMs, expanding / optimizing existing VMs, managing snapshots, etc.), security cameras, onsite and offsite automated backups, light database management, website management (CMS, MySQL, some PHP, CSS, HTML, cPanel, host management / migrations, etc.), and any other systems we adopt- Keep firmware and software up to date on all physical devices on the network (APs / routers, switches, servers, SANs, etc.)- Develop and maintain strong security practices, and actively survey network for weaknesses, breaches, etc., allaying any as quickly and non-disruptively as possible- Gain and retain a strong understanding of developing on the Filemaker platform- Develop standardized strategies and documentation to ensure consistent, rapid, and reliable support for network users- Assess the efficacy of, and optimize, the internal network, both wired and wireless. This includes sustaining existing hardware, and deploying new hardware- Act as coordinator and central point of contact for all ongoing technical projects- Designed and executed upon move to new store location, developing and deploying all aspects of IT needs, including, as seamlessly as possible, transitioning administrative operations. This included building a network (switches, envisioning low-voltage wiring, laying out drop points, etc) from the ground up, moving the server array, rebuilding WAN DNS/NAT to ensure unbroken communications for over 15 distinct services, personally installing 10 POSes, deploying a new-to-business VOIP phone system, and any other challenges that emerged.

Duties Include:- Primarily, beyond the job parameters and given where the business was at the time , this position entailed extremely flexible, creative thinking and development. Built or streamlined hundreds of reports, workflows, efficiencies, and related things in a six month span, reducing the complete standard workload from an unmanageable 60+ hours per week to fewer than 20 hours per week. This allowed the rerouting of duties in this position from purely reactive to proactive and exploratory. - Setting and maintaining three different kinds of deals around the store, about 800 - 1,000 deals rotating every two weeks to one month- Maintaining the active pricing database by being the primary point of contact for price changes, updates, and other aspects of inventory management- Extensively learning, managing, and developing with Store Management Suite (SMS), a highly extensible point of sale technology- Extending and strengthening the reporting, system update, and information-flow process into and out of the store management system- Generating various kinds of reports as needed by several departments and individuals

Most importantly, this work taught me to (1) deeply assess organizations - their design, strengths, weaknesses, and numerous nuance woven throughout these points. It also taught me to (2) think beyond the current framework, workflows, and orientation an organization follows or presents, to deeply, with care and grace and subtlety, determine, suggest, and even (if the culture has the capability to accept it) implement changes anywhere within the organizational design stack. It even presented me with opportunities to (3) parse the gradations of an organization's culture and build functional ideas for gently guiding it to a more effective, effectual, and/or productive design. I consider these skills foundational to who I have become as a professional. I use them nearly daily, hone them with experience and time, and apply them to every appropriate nuance of my personal and professional life. My work at OMNI included: - Researching technologies that meet their needs and building proposals for their adoption;- Researching and proposing nonprofit best practices; - Producing and administrating OMNI's website;- Learning and teaching the ins and outs of email marketing with Constant Contact, and other systems peripherally;- Learning, implementing, and administrating many aspects of Salesforce CRM;- Developing and facilitating various kinds of trainings (technology, organizing skills, nonprofit management skills, and more);- Managing OMNI's tech landscape, including fixing software issues in house, upgrading machines, occasional hardware optimization, and various troubleshooting;- Envisioning a volunteer management system;- Writing and refining volunteer positions;- Facilitating meetings and mediating conflict; - Helping develop a support and managerial body for OMNI's youth programs.

Using a dual-laptop system and Typewell's abbreviation system, I provided hard-of-hearing or deaf students access to in-class lectures. This involved troubleshooting connection issues during class; providing meaning-for-meaning, real-time, type-written transcription of lectures and classroom dynamics; and timely editing of the transcripts I produced.
