During my four years in the Army, I was tasked as an infantry platoon medic. I was in charge of the medical readiness of my soldiers, which consisted of maintaining records of: eyes, ears, dental, and immunizations. Being in charge of these records allowed my platoon to be deployment ready. I worked side by side with a Physician's Assistant and routinely did "sick call," which is the military's equivalent to ER triage. The medic was in charge of screening the patient and then taking one of two routes. One route was making the autonomous decision of passing out meds and maintaining follow up care with the patient. The second route was when the complexity of the patient's care was outside of our scope of practice, at which point we would do a full work up using a "SOAP" note and presenting the patient to the PA. Last but not least, the medic would train in the field with the infantry in high-risk situations. The medic worked on maneuver ranges with live ammunition, airborne operations (high-risk for orthopedic injuries), and many training events in high heat categories, which more often than not lead to patients with some sort of heat injury.4 years post military, I received my first nursing position in the Emergency Department at the height of the COVID19 pandemic. I facilitate the diagnostic workup of patients, ranging from fast track to code situations. I have assisted in minor procedures such as sutures, suture removals, conscious sedation, and intubation. I am familiar with ventilators, bipap, high-flow, and breathing treatments. I manage patients ranging from medical-surgical to critical care. Although I have never worked in an official critical care unit, I do have the experience to maintain a critical care level patient. I pride myself in being a team player first, being a forever student of medicine, and building trusting relationships with superiors and peers.
