I was hired as a Senior Plant Operator/ shift engineer to commission and start up a pilot CSS Thermal plant with a small 25mmbtu OTSG. The plant would run for about a year and a half before being shutdown due to low oil prices at which time I was transferred to a unconventional oil treating plant in Seal Lake.

I started off being a unit operator and learning the different units in the plant. In one year and eight months I progressed on to the Control room as panel operator. Which I spent around two years at, and then progressed on to the Plant Lead Op/ Shift Engineer position. I did that job for about four and a half years and then was asked to come off shift and look after all projects and to support the new temp chief engineer as our chief engineer had retired and the foreman was temporarily reassigned the position. So until the new foreman was hired I filled in for that job for almost two years. During that period I was providing operational support to the Operations team as well as looking after projects going on throughout the plant, which included a Sulphur remelting project, and associated maintenance and melt tank repairs. I was intensely involved in corrosion studies for the entire facility. I was a key participant in cataloging all piping systems throughout the plant for a risk based integrity management system for basing turnaround requirements.

The job required a minimum of a 4th class power engineer certificate of competency. The job had a wide range of duties; from general building maintenance to grounds maintenance. Also repairing kitchen equipment, laundry facility equipment, steam piping, copper water lines,sewer lines, all the plumbing and pipefitting required to get the job done. Also responsible for testing the ultra pure water for the renal dialysis unit. During my tenure at the hospital I did a temporary job post as a shift engineer in the power plant operations department which gave me my firing time required to write my third class certificate, which I did while I was working there as well.
