Kinder Morgan extracts naturally occurring CO2 from formations underground in Colorado, then compresses and pipelines the CO2 to West Texas where it is used for Enhanced Oil Recovery. My job initially is to look at and improve reliability of the compression equipment which includes a fleet of 5000hp+ reciprocating compressors and several new installations of centrifugal booster compressors.

Mechanical Maintenance and Reliability activities for one membrane and one diaphragm chlorine production unit (total 1450TPD) as well as a membrane caustic unit. Centrifugal, reciprocating and liquid ring compressors, shell/tube and plate/frame heat exchangers, refrigeration systems for liquefaction and chilled water, Cummins KTA diesel emergency generator, fiberglass and lined pipe and vessels. Major challenges in these chlor-alkali plants are corrosion and erosion, so a heavy emphasis is placed on material selection for service (nickel alloys, titanium, stainless steel, teflon lined, fiberglass, etc.).

New company formed by merger of Georgial Gulf with PPG Commodity Chemicals, same job, same location, new name. Worked to increase rotating equipment availability through predictive maintenance, modern diagnostic tools, and industry best practices. I had responsibility for a 700 TPD Membrane Chlorine plant, 1950's era evaporative Caustic plant, a 120TPD anhydrous caustic pellet plant, and a small mercury recovery unit. Equipment included centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, single stage steam turbines, solid bowl centrifuges, liquid ring vacuum pumps, specialized and ANSI pumps, mixers, bucket elevators, motors, gearboxes, etc. I also routinely helped out in other areas of the site on integrally geared process and air compressors, boiler feedwater pumps, and GE Frame 7 gas turbine generators.

Managed field overhaul and repair projects on major plant rotating equipment including compressors, turbines, gearboxes, generators, expanders, integral gas engines, etc. Up to 60 employees under my direction and up to 5 simultaneous projects in multiple locations. Average annual project billing over $4MM. Total Project Responsibility from proposal generation, planning, execution, reporting, and invoicing.

Performed vibration analysis on compressors, steam turbines, pumps, electric motors, and fans. Field balanced fans and cooling tower fan drive shafts. Developed in-house databases in MS Access for various engineering department functions.
