Profile bio

About Ryan Cockerill, Cpa

For over five years I have worked in and have transitioned to doing accounting and consulting for construction companies. Before making the transition to the accounting side of construction, I started out working in small residential remodels during my childhood. I used to love seeing a house I helped work on getting built from start to finish. But it didn’t take long for me to figure out my strengths weren’t going to go much further than being a professional shop vac operator and nail puller.Later I discovered that I took greater interest in the estimation and accounting processes of the projects I worked on. And after taking notice of my bosses’ frantically searching for receipts in a truck littered with Subway wrappers, I knew where I could provide much more value. For a brief time, I was an auditor at a top globally recognized accounting firm. I was a part of public tech company audits like Autodesk and Wish. However, I did not get the same satisfaction I did when being part of a construction project from start to finish. Now I get my satisfaction from seeing a project, that I helped planned/manage financially, finish under budget and on-time.And after working for and with different construction companies, I know the accounting challenges they face and how to solve them.Tell me if any of this sounds familiar:* One month your bank account is flushed with cash. Shortly after, you’re struggling to make payroll and pay bills. That is, if you are even aware of all the bills you must pay.* When invoicing, you constantly doubt and double-check if you included all billable expenses.* Am I even making money on this job?* My estimating process takes forever, always misses something, and never seems to charge enough for my overhead and profit.* Even if the IRS doesn’t question your expenses, your customers almost certainly do. Near the end of the job, they demand documentation of the job expenses you billed them.* I know I have that customer’s email approval of that change order somewhere…* You’re uncertain of how much to pay yourself and how to do it. Tax time is always a bit stressful as you’re never certain if you’re going to get a refund or a big tax bill with penalties and interest.* You find yourself having to return money to your company that you had originally paid yourself with. Maybe you even had to take out a loan to do it.If you manage a construction company, and know what I’m talking about, I’d be happy to have a connect with you to set up an appointment. I have owned Booking It for over five years now, and have helped other business owners organize, grow, and even sell their businesses. My favorite success story is my client Lakewood Construction. Jack, the founder, came to me while working full-time at another construction company. He wanted to start his own construction company and envisioned moving from small touch-up jobs to constructing luxury homes. However, he had no idea where to start and had no prior business experience. Three years later, Lakewood is now thriving with over ten employees and only bids on projects in one of its area’s most exclusive country club communities.Over those three years, we encountered and conquered almost every accounting challenge imaginable like having to:* Create a system to efficiently record the billable status, job, category, payment method, etc. for every month’s 200+ transactions.* Transition from time & material invoicing to fixed-price invoicing.* Create a quick, detailed, and accurate estimate process to ensure profitability and set budgets.* Implement a Profit First cash flow management approach to ensure each job's estimated profits could be disbursed without fear of taking from customer deposits and tax withholdings.* Handle large volumes of change orders from multiple jobs at once.* Efficiently go from tracking time for two employees to twelve. Using a proven methodology that adheres to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), we can help manage your:~ Job budgeting, estimates, and change order adjustments~ Invoicing ~ Bill payments~ Reconciliation of bank, debt, and vendor statements~ Documentation, transaction records, and day-to-day accounting operations~ Payroll~ Financial statement analysisNever again will you need to worry about the accuracy of your company’s financial/tax reporting. The only time you focus on your businesses’ finances is for making strategic business decisions; not for addressing compliance requirements.
