A MCIWS is the primary source of water survival instruction in the USMC. A MCIWS qualifies, re-qualifies, and upgrades Marines in Marine Combat Water Survival Training (MCWST) levels. The MCIWS school has an attrition rate of 60-70%. My job is to train Marines and Recruits in Water Survival Basic (WSB) and Intermediate (WSI),by giving them classes on Personal Flotation Devices, Field Expedient Flotation Devices ex. Rolled Iso mat,5 gallon water jug with some fresh water, mission essential gear water proofed and put in main pack and how to float with a main pack. I show them how to inflate their blouse for a flotation device.I show them how to inflate their trousers as a primary flotation device. A demonstration of each is done. I instruct how to Crawl Stroke, Breast Stroke, Side Stroke, Beginner on Back, Elementary Back stroke and show them why the doggie paddle is not recommended. We also go over proper under water swimming techniques. I tell them what Hyperventilation is and how it can cause shallow water blackout. I instruct them about Hypothermia and how to combat it and in cress your chance of survival up to 50%. I also give them a class about the proper way to swim if your hands are feet are tied and you are thrown off an enemy ship. I instruct them on shedding a full combat load in shallow water. Then they conduct the training using the techniques they were taught in my classes.I only train Marines in WSI and above. The classes for WSI are Deep Water Gear Shed. I coach them on how to retain a full combat load with main pack and float with them. Proper swimming techniques for a 250 meter swim. I teach on how to float for 10 minutes transitioning from blouse to trousers. I train Marines going through the MCIWS school on how to escape from a panicked victim under water then rescue them.I'm team leader on the PI Mobile swim qualification team. We travel the east coast qualifying Marines who don't have assets to. There is less than 500 MCIWS in the USMC today.

    Drill Instructor
Mcrd Parris Island May 2012 - Mar 2013
    Parris Island Sc
I was flagged for DI duty in 2011. I attended DI school aboard Parris Island. I worked 3 cycles as a green belt drill instructor. My job was to teach knowledge and instill discipline. I taught them the the roper wear of the uniforms. While there I would use my knowledge as a Combat Marksmanship Coach to train my recruits in the Known Distance portion and the Table 2 portion. With those skills my platoons had averages 305, 305 and 306 which are all Expert qualifications. This was the Recruit Training Regiment's highest ever. Thats a full 17 points higher then the average platoons in the Regiment. I emphasizes leadership, judgment, professionalism, time-management, and, of course, physical fitness to the recruits. I mentor, train and lead them from the front to mold them to the Marine Corps standard of a basically trained Marine. I also give them classes on swimming, military history, martial arts, and numerous other military skills and life lessons. I prefer to emphasize my classes on leadership, working as a team, proper shooting platforms for rifle qualification and proper shooting stances and immediate/remedial actions for the M16 during the Combat Marksmanship portion of training. Later in training I also teach the reporting procedures for 9-line MEDEVAC's and how to Call For Fire. Also I like to teach them the standard knowledge for anti-tank/armor weapons as well as grenade launchers and all machine guns. From my certification of HRST Master I teach them knots and about rappelling off of structors and out of helo's and what SPIE rigging is. I try to mentor them the the highest of my capability so they can a excel as Marines and human beings. I use my own personal accounts of failure and how I overcame the failure and in the end succeeded to be in the top 3% of my MOS 0352 TOW Gunner.
