Research/Thesis Work(Synthesis and adsorption properties of molybdenum(IV) sulfide, MoS2, and tungsten(IV) sulfide, WS2 nanostructures with curved atomic layers)Highlights/accomplishments-For the first time, elongated MoO3 particles were converted to MoS2 nanorods while preserving morphology in a solid state synthesis. -Elongated MoO3 particles were synthesized using a polymer assisted sonochemical method as described by B. Chu. This method was successfully extended to WO3 for the first time.-Selective synthesis of MoS2 and WS2 nanorods by the sulfidation of oxide precursors with the same morphology was successfully performed.-MoS2 synthesized nanotubes/nanorods over 6 microns in length were observed with diameters less than 100 nanometers-Experimental setup for infrared spectroscopic studies of adsorption of molecules on solid surfaces was constructed. Two plexiglass boxes purged with nitrogen were created to deliver the infrared beam from the source through the vacuum chamber containing nanotube samples and to the detector. Infrared beam was delivered and focused onto samples within the vacuum chamber through precise alignment of gold mirrors.- High vacuum was sustained at a pressure of 3 x 10-7 Torr. Very low intensity infrared signals from adsorbed species could be observed due to very low noise level. -Project required characterization of produced MoS2, WS2, WO3, MoO3 nanotubes/nanostructures through the use of transmission electron microscope, IR, and UV-Vis data.-Gained valuable experience in designing and managing a research project-Had the oppurtunity to independently overcome research difficulties -Proficient in operation and interpretation of NMR, extensive experience in many forms of infrared spectroscopy (ATR, transmission, thin film), mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and chromatography.

-Served as teaching assistant for general chemistry 1 & 2 laboratories. -Duties involved preparation of labs, tutoring and directing students during lab, and grading of lab reports. -Tutored several students outside of the lab to help them in the classroom portion of the course

- Tutored nursing and chemistry majors in general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, statistical thermodynamics, calculus, and biochemistry. -Successfully helped 40 students improve test scores in these classes over a six year period.
