Bid Manager and Technical Lead for the successful Govan Partick Bridge Tender in Glasgow. I worked with the team to develop the methodology for this £30 Million three span cable stayed swing bridge. I lead the decision to maximise off site fabrication by forming a collaborative team with strategic supply chain partners. This provided cost savings while deriving a safer, higher quality end product that will cause less disruption to the live navigation channel on the River Clyde. I worked with the team to rationalise our method around the existing quay extensions, dredging works, marine cofferdam and in-river bridge pier construction, which underpinned our successful tender. I was responsible for interrogating the Client’s design and specification to select the correct methodology allowing Farrans to submit the most economically advantageous tender. I also compiled and lead the contract review and negotiated amended NEC3 Option A terms with the Client prior to tender submission.

Bid Manager and Technical Lead for the Farrans Construction team in the successful tender for the Lake Lothing Third Crossing. This technically demanding 35m single span rolling bascule bridge includes two marine cofferdams, rotary bored piles to depths up to 57m, 300m of approach viaduct, seven bridge piers and two abutments, a 700t Bascule Leaf Installation, a 1100t railway span installation under possession and a 7-story control tower building. As Bid Manager I lead the quality and technical proposals. I was responsible for interrogating the Client’s design and specification to select the correct methodology allowing Farrans to submit the most economically advantageous tender. I also compiled and lead the contract review and negotiated terms around the amended NEC4 Option A terms with the Client prior to tender submission.

Following the successful tender for the Great Yarmouth Third River Crossing I continued my involvement with the project acting as the DCO Co-Ordinator for the BAM Farrans Joint Venture (BFJV). This consisted over 16 workshops with the Client’s consultant WSP to incorporate the BFJV design into their DCO Application with the planning inspectorate. The scheme has recently been granted funding and planning consent and is due to commence on site January 2021. I acted as Marine Agent throughout the ECI advising on buildability, method selection and reviewing design development.

Bid Manager for Farrans for the successful tender for the Great Yarmouth Third River Crossing as part of BFJV responsible for:• Production of the construction methodology quality submission• Attending 24 Client meetings throughout the competitive dialogue to help the team better understand the NCC’s needs. • Design coordination of the tender design from the contractor’s perspective ensuring we had an efficient and buildable solution which ultimately saved on cost. Our bascule solution with balanced bridge deck and counterweight saved 3000t of structural steel to that of our competitors.• Ensuring integration of temporary and permanent works leading to cost savings and efficiencies on our tender.

Supervision of riverworks section on the 340m span cable-stayed bridge across the River Wear, Sunderland.Responsibilities included:- Management of installation 30x15x10m deep King Post/Sheet Combi Wall, associated framing, drainage and excavation using marine based plant.- Liason with Port authority on pile delivery and transit up-river using modular pontoons.- Management of installation of 10 No 1.5m dia 30m deep rotary bored LDA Piles from a temporary works frame installed ontop of the cofferdam allowing installation of the piles in dry conditions.- Installation of Temporary Supports consisting of vertical and raking steel tubular piles using a leader rig working from a Jack-Up Barge.- Successful planning and delivery of 28 hr 1400 cu.m reinforced concrete base pour using 2 no 140m long static line pumps.- Construction of Pylon Tusks and temporary works enabling sucessful erection of 1550T x 105m Steel Pylon.- Design and installation of Temporary Access bridge enabling pedestrian and service transfer from shore to river works. Access bridge was formed by re-using piling gates from pile installation.- Successful completion of holding down connection within Pylon including a combination of post-tensioned Dywidag threadbars and reinforced concrete.- Marine demolition/removal of all cofferdam and temporary works post bridge completion.

Section Engineer overseeing the widening of the Seaforth Passage within the Port of Liverpool.Responsibilities included:-Installation of 115m long x 24m deep Combi Wall with 1600mm dia tubes driven through and between the existing quay structures.-Installation of Sheet Piled Anchor wall including installation and stressing of Anker Schroeder Tie Rod System.-Installation of 15 x 12 x 25m deep Cofferdam and sheet piled diversion channel allowing extension of 3m diameter live sewer at 25m depth.-Prefabrication, installation and connection of the 120m x 100T x 1m dia Service Diversion U-Tube including planning and successful completion of the 3-Crane Lift Installation within an agreed 48hr possession of the live shipping channel.-Extensive wire-saw and robotic hydro-demolition works to complete demolition and FRC Tie-ins to existing structure including underwater reinstatements within the permanently impounded dock level.-Supervision of FRC works in completion of replacement Quay Cope.-Overseeing the underwater demolition of 20,000 cu.m of existing Quay including 900mm thick x 20m deep diaphragm walls without compromising the live 3m dia sewer.-Successful removal of the 420T Sector Gate using a combination of divers, explosives and 250T Crane Barge-Successful planning and removal of 2 x 170T Sector Gate Hinges underwater utilising 250T Crane Barge, divers and 250T dyneema slings.

Quay Engineer on 480m long new quay structure and deep water berth located in the Port of Belfast. The Quay wall was constructed over both land and water using steel combi tube and sheet pile wall tied back to a piled anchor beam with intermediate concrete bearing piles supporting a reinforced concrete relieving slab. Works also include dredging of the berth and approaches in the region of 500,000m3 to be disposed off to sea with treatment and disposal of some contaminated material to land. Behind the new quay there is 50 acres of hinterland to receive of a heavy duty unbound pavement construction with associated site servicesResponsibilities included:- Supervision and setting out of two piling squads for the 480m long quay wall structure.- Drilling of piles to achieve final depths using Rotary Bored Piling Rigs.- Supervision of installation of approx 800 no 750mm dia CFA's up to 30m depth.- Supervision of and installation 360 no raking tubes to form anhor wall including 180 no ground anchors- Installation of Anker Schroeder tie rods tying combi-wall to anchor wall.- Supervision of FRC works on Anchor Beam, Slab and Cope Beam ranging form 250 cu.m to 800 cu.m.- Installation of Fenders.- Supervision of dredging and rock armour placement works.

As part of the 18km M80 Stepps to Haggs DBFO Project I worked within 10km online section where the existing A80 trunk road was widenend and upgraded to motorway standed. Based within the online structures I was responsible for:- Widenening and and stengthening of 3 existing overbridges along the A80 whilst maintaining live traffic flow.- Management of phased specialist demolition works to cater for traffic managment needs on each of the structures including - wire sawing, hydro-demolition, floor sawing and wall sawing.- In-situ FRC Reinstatements and supervision of temporary works.- Existing bridge deck repairs using concrete repair products and cathodic protection.- Bridge Bearing replacement, deck waterproofing and finishing works.- Installation of pattern profile verges.

Following on from dissertation work, during final year I worked part-time within the Concrete and Heavy Testing Laboratory at Queen's University Belfast testing a wide variety of materials and structures to British and European standards.Responsibilities included:- Crushing and Testing of Concrete Cube and Core Samples- Non-destructive pull-off testing of in-situ concrete- Testing and analysing of steel reinforcement- Compressive testing of masonary brick work- Soil sampling and grading.

Design and construction of an underground basement at Victoria Square, Belfast, involving installation of permanent sheet piled cofferdam tied back with ground anchors.Responsibilites included:- Checking off and supervision of reinforced concrete base pours ranging from 200 cu.m-800cu.m.- Pre-pour checks and QA on reinforcement, concrete testing and post-tensioning works on slab.- Setting out works using combination of level and total station.

The Foyle Bridge consists of a central cantilever span of 234 metres with several more approach spans giving a total bridge length of 866 metres. The contract involved the Internal strengthening of the box girder bridge with postensioned steel tubes, external maintenance painting and replacement of waterproofing and mastic asphalt surfacing. Works included major traffic management on a 30,000 AADT road, and involved phased possessions of the site.
