Learning scientist experienced with prompt system engineering, Python, SQL, big and small data, statistical analysis, machine learning, and quantitative and qualitative research. Has a deep passion for understanding and solving complex issues using both data- and theory-driven approaches.---------------------------------I learned to see the world through the lens of mathematical models studying physics in university. I then traveled widely and gained a range of intercultural communication skills. After settling in Japan, I became obsessed with understanding how to most effectively teach English and learn Japanese. This obsession led me back to higher education, where I researched second language learning in adults and first language learning in children. A common thread in my research has been understanding the role of attention; how it is both shaped by our past experiences and influences what we take away from learning opportunities. To explore these research questions I gained expertise in cutting edge methodologies and data analysis techniques.At Thinkery, a children's science museum, I was able to directly apply the skills I developed to improve children's and parents' learning experiences. Seeing how my deep understanding of the learning sciences could be applied to improving the design of learning experiences and the lives of learners solidified my decision to transition to more applied work in industry. I now work as a learning scientist at Duolingo, striving to increase the efficacy of our language learning app and positively impacting the lives of millions of learners.
