Ryan Engels is a sophomore at the University of Connecticut, majoring in political science. At UConn, he serves as a Senator in the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) and as Alumni Chairman of the Connecticut Beta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (ΣAE). Ryan is also actively involved in HuskyTHON, UConn's annual dance marathon benefiting Connecticut Children's Hospital.Previously, Ryan graduated and received his diploma from Westbrook High School, where he was the captain of the varsity soccer, basketball, and tennis teams. Additionally, Ryan was a member of National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and was heavily involved in the school's mock trial.During high school, Ryan interned for a local law firm, where his love for public service and the law began. Before graduating in June of 2023, Ryan wrote of a letter of interest to the Westbrook, Connecticut Board of Selectmen, urging the board for an appointment to the town's Inland Wetlands & Watercourses Commission, a land use commission that regulates activity within 100 feet of all inland wetlands or watercourses. Ryan was appointed in April, two months after turning 18 years old, becoming the youngest Commissioner in the town. Although residing at the UConn Storrs Campus for most of the year, Ryan remains highly dedicated to his hometown community in Westbrook. He served as a Youth Outreach Advisor to the Westbrook Coastal Resiliency Committee from July 2023 to June of 2024 and joined the Westbrook Democratic Town Committee shortly after, currently serving as the committee's youngest member.Ryan most recently founded the Connecticut Youth Political Advocacy Center (CYPAC), a statewide, non-partisan organization dedicated to advocating for CT young people at the state, regional, and local levels. Since it's inception in September of 2023, the organization has grown to over 75 members, launched a state internship database, mentorship program, and launched it's 2024 Legislative Priorities. Ryan started the organization with the goal of getting young people more interested and involved in state, regional, and local government.
