Hi, there. I’m Ryan and I’m driven by my curiosity about computing. As a child, we purchased our first PC, an Acer 4000 desktop running Windows 98, in 1998. I remember my fascination with sending text messages, using AOL’s Instance Messenger (AIM), to friends and family hundreds of miles away. I then began downloading music using Napster, may she rest in peace, and then moved on to Kazaa, Bearshare, Direct Connect, and Usenet. We replaced our Acer with a custom PC built by a friend. Then came broadband… hello speed. Our 10 GB hard drive couldn’t keep up with my downloading habits. We eventually moved on to an HP running Windows XP.How claustrophobic the out-of-the-box experience by HP, and others, felt. Bloatware consumed most of the resources on this measly machine and I wanted performance. I reinstalled XP several times and lost who knows how much of my parents' data because… what are backups? This is when I started looking at Linux and alternate forms of computing.The first time I installed a Red Hat-based distro I had no idea how to install packages. No matter. I loved the experience and began bistro hopping. Eventually, I tried other alternatives such as FreeBSD and OSs running the illumos kernel such as OmniOS. I formulated a newfound appreciation for open-source operating systems and software.By this time I had become known as the computer repair guy by family and friends. I have diagnosed and fixed everything from bad memory, machines that won’t boot, and services that continually crash. I’ve also been roped in on issues with TVs, Blu-ray players, and the replacement of cracked iPhone screens because… aren’t these computers too?!?! That and if you understand computers, you’re practically a magician. The coolest problems involved memory errors on a friend’s laptop that involved desoldering the onboard chips to resurrect this machine. ;)I’m a software engineer working for a large cloud provider utilizing tools such as Terraform, Ansible, and Kubernetes to continue to feed my hunger and curiosity for computing. I love cloud computing and the elasticity it provides when deploying software. I’ve even taken a foray into a software engineering boot camp offered by Thinkful to obtain a better understanding of how to build software.My specialties include engineering, hardware, networking, Linux, bash, Terraform, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap, ReactJS, debugging, and troubleshooting.The coolest project right now is being built by Oxide Computers.
