Ryan Fox is an associate at Lyons & Salky, LLP, where he provides counsel to individuals and businesses on a wide range of matters, including book publishing, motion picture and television, copyright and trademark, and content clearance and fair use. Before joining the firm, Ryan was Policy & Advocacy Director at the Authors Guild, where he focused on copyright law and the publishing industry, drafting numerous policy papers on issues such as fair use, moral rights, and internet piracy, and assisting members with issues regarding their publishing contracts. He has spoken at bar association, government, and publishing industry events on topics such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, fair use, developing digital markets, and extended collective licensing. He has also worked on entertainment industry contracts as an attorney at HBO, and has held internships at the Guggenheim Museum and Sterling Lord Literistic.Ryan holds a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal. He graduated with an MFA in Poetry from the University of Virginia, and his poetry has earned the “Discovery”/Boston Review prize and a Yaddo residency. His poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Boston Review and others. Ryan holds a B.A. from the University of Missouri. He is admitted to the New York State Bar.

Negotiated and drafted location, event and rental agreements; researched and produced legal memos on right of publicity and nominative fair use; reviewed content for copyright and trademark issues and cleared content promoting original television programming.

Researched and drafted comments submitted to the U.S. Copyright Office on copyright policy issues such as Section 512 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, moral rights in U.S. law, and Copyright Office modernization; worked to promote (copyright small claims tribunal, e.g.) or oppose (expansion of NY state right of publicity law, e.g.) federal and state legislation according to its effect on authors’ rights; kept abreast of policy and legislative developments in copyright, first amendment, Internet piracy, net neutrality, antitrust, contracts, and other areas; presented on panels and led seminars on those issues; assisted Guild members on IP and contract issues; drafted and composed white papers, letters to Congress, and articles on issues central to today’s copyright and publishing landscapes.

Worked with a team of Guild staff and outside counsel on Second Circuit appeal and SCOTUS cert petition in Authors Guild v. Google; worked on Congressional testimony on fair use and mass digitization; led phone seminars for members on statutory termination rights and Internet piracy; presented on collective licensing at a Copyright Office/WIPO international copyright seminar; researched and drafted white paper arguing for increased antitrust scrutiny of Amazon; provided member assistance and composed articles and web posts.

Reviewed promotional material for copyright and trademark issues; worked with Counsel to draft location, event and rental agreements.

Researched and wrote two scholarly articles on military sex crimes for law journal publication.

Led Editorial Board of 15 and staff of 60 law students through publication of over 1,400 pages of legal scholarship.
