I am a results-driven professional who delivers value by translating cutting-edge research in optimization and operations research into practical solutions in the mining industry. My key areas of focus are:Strategic Mine Planning: I am embedded in Newmont's Strategic Resource Development group - a small, cross-functional team deployed to define the strategic direction for existing operations and projects. We deliver value by identifying critical constraints that unlock value, and develop in-house, fit-for-purpose strategic optimization models to provide a data-driven decision support approach. We have developed strategic planning optimization models for open pit and/or underground mining operations with complex processing flows and capital investment options. We work collaboratively across teams and functions, and communicate results at all levels within the company.Turning Strategic Plans into Achievable Plans:All strategic planning tools in mining ignore practical aspects in mining that make translating strategy into something that sites can achieve in practice. Buy-in is critical to deliver value, and I have worked to develop strong relationships with site engineers and demonstrate the use of advanced technology in mining. Through R&D, I have developed novel approaches that translate strategic Life of Asset plans to practical plans at daily/resource scales, making it easier for sites to adhere to overall strategy for medium- and long-range planners.Risk-Based Decision-Making (Stochastic Optimization): I have 15 years of experience in risk-based decision-making and delivering value by making these technologies accessible to the mining industry. My PhD focused on developing new models for large-scale optimization of mining complexes. My Post-Doc focused on translating the latest cutting-edge research into practical tools that can be used by mining practitioners. These tools are now commercially available. I continue to develop new tools and approaches to integrate risk into strategic and tactical mine planning.Training and Coaching:For over 10 years, I have taught modern optimization concepts and stochastic mine planning to students and industry professionals through university courses, and professional development series hosted by CIM, SME and AusIMM. I take great pride in helping others understand these concepts in-depth and sow the seeds for the next generation of mining engineers and managers.
