My name is Ryan Gorey. I’m a people person cleverly disguised as an engineer.People often think of technology as something quantitative or technical. While those are both fair associations to make, I believe they fall short of the complete picture. Technology can also be messy, incomplete, and imperfect– after all, we’re often using it to serve people and their needs, complete with all the quirks and idiosyncrasies people bring to the table.I firmly believe that messiness is precisely what makes the work so much fun. What’s more exciting than harnessing the power of deterministic, rigid processes to try and take measurements of things that are, in all actuality, unmeasurable? How we do we determine the value of something like a house, or assign a quality or rating to a piece of art or media? And how do we then look at those sets of imperfect assignments and manipulate them to produce meaningful conclusions?I’m eager to begin a career in which I can continue developing, refining, and sharing systems that help connect clients to the services and products they want – whether that be as a software engineer expanding our internal toolkits, or a developer creating products for customers. I’m especially excited to develop systems that create or support positive social change.I can often be found spilling coffee on my pants, sharing music with strangers by accidentally unplugging my headphones in public places, and petting every dog I make eye contact with. Ask me why I think the best place for french roast coffee is the bottom of a garbage can, or why I think the TV show Survivor presents an extremely compelling case study of non-cooperative game theory (and how I’m trying to model it).
