About Ryan Himes

I am a person of many interests. I have always been excited to try new things, having new experiences, meeting new people, and taking on new challenges. Much of my time in college was spent in the liberal arts, specifically theatre which was one of my first true passions, but I have been drawn to the field of medicine and science. Courses in the sciences have equally fascinated me as well as provided much of a challenge. But it's these challenges that keep pushing me to further my skills to eventually move onto an academic program in medicine. A career in medicine is where I feel I can do the most good in the world. Everyone needs a doctor at some time, and knowing that I can be there to provide support, information, education, and health security for those in need, seems like a highly rewarding life. I enjoy traveling to new places, exploring the outdoors, and visiting new cities to gain a new perspective of other cultures and societies. I like being on the mountain snowboarding, playing ultimate Frisbee with friends, and working on my car in my free time. I try to believe that life has moments of good and bad, but it is up to us to choose how to deal with them. If I am given the choice, I choose to be positive. And if I can help people along the way, and spread good vibes and be a supporting figure, then I am doing my part for the betterment of the world.

Right out of high school in 2012 I got a job as a carpet technician for Stanley Steemer where I currently work now. It has been a great company that has helped me develop skills in customer care by learning how to listen to customers and focus on what services they need. Working for Stanley Steemer is labor intensive and has taught me to value hard work and tenacity. I have continued to grow in the company and am one of the most tenured employees at my location. Frequently I have customers let my managers know that I provided excellent services for them. It is a wonderful feeling to know that I am helping people and they take time out of their day to let me know.

I worked in the ER of PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver as an emergency medical scribe. I was required to take a month long class to study medical terms as well as procedures required of me to be a medical scribe for doctors. I was to assist doctors by recording information from patients regarding their chief complaint for coming into the ER, as well as recording the diagnosis of the patient given by the doctor. Much time was spent charting patients information which required active listening while the doctor conversed with the patient. It was a brief, but highly rewarding experience that influenced me to continue progressing in the medical field.
