Ryan joined JBA in August 2015 as a Technical Assistant working in the Catchment Management and Hydroecology team. He has a BSc in Environmental Management and Sustainability from Manchester Metropolitan University.In 2021 Ryan has completed his Post Graduate Diploma at Lancaster University in Flood and Coastal Risk Management. His modules covered topics such as; Flood Risk Assessments, Urban Hydrology, Sustainable Drainage Systems, Surface Water Management, River Hydraulics, River Modelling, Sustainable Floodplain Management and Restoration.Ryan’s experience at JBA has been primarily involved with Natural Flood Management focusing on hydraulic modelling of NFM interventions. This work involved catchment scale studies to identify and model numerous NFM interventions using both fluvial and pluvial hydraulic models, using several different modelling software packages including JFlow, HECRAS, HECRAS 2D, ISIS, TUFLOW and Flood Modeller. Ryan also has an understanding is flood risk and sensibility checking, calibrating and validating of hydraulic model outputs on several scales.Ryan has also carried out several NFM catchment walkover surveys aiming to identify potential NFM interventions to aid reducing surface water flow, reducing sediment supply, improving water quality and biodiversity using the latest GPS plotting software.During this time, Ryan also gained a knowledge of flood hydrology including; flood mapping, the FEH handbook and how this is applied in the UK, ReFH, ReFH2 as well as groundwater and baseflow concepts.He regularly works with environmental, topographic, Ordnance Survey and Environment Agency data including DTM modifications and has experience managing and integrating this within his projects. Recently Ryan has completed Flood Risk Assessments, (FRA’s) using FEH and ReFH software to calculate specific surface water runoff values. As well as frequently using the Working With Natural Processes (WWNP) potential NFM maps to identify potential opportunities.Ryan has also volunteered on several local NFM projects. Helping to implement leaky woody debris and riparian woodland planting. As well as supporting the JBA Trust (Charity) by demonstrating water safety and river hydraulics using JBA's physical models. He has carried out these demonstrations to several audiences including schools and at flood risk conferences. Ryan has also given several NFM talks to large audiences at conferences and online.
