My responsibilities were to oversee the daily operations of the job site, scheduled crews, coordinated subcontractors, and worked with the Project Manager to ensure a successful completion of the project. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development selected a Kiewit-led joint venture to complete the $447 million project to upgrade the capacity of the existing bridge which was built in the 1930’s. It was the final contract in a series of four. The existing bridge carried two railroad tracks for the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad and two 18-foot roadways over the Mississippi River. Lanes were expanded from two, nine-foot lanes in each direction with no shoulder to three, 11-foot travel lanes with a two-foot inside shoulder and eight-foot outside shoulder. The project’s scope included replacing the east and west approach structures, constructing a three-lane deck and new signalized intersections. The main bridge structure for vehicular traffic included the 4,700-foot east approach, the 2,400-foot main span river crossing, the 5,600-foot west approach. The approach structures are composed of both precast concrete and structural steel girders, while the deck widening will be supported by a four-span widened structural steel truss about 150 feet above the river.
