Ryan Kinnett Email and Phone Number
Spacecraft systems engineer, fluent and experienced in all SE responsibilities across all project phases from formulation to flight. Best known for being detail-oriented and capable of diving deep into complex systems. Thrives when faced with highly technical system challenges involving mixes of hardware and software and physical manifestations. Pioneered a new and much-needed sub-discipline of systems engineering at JPL, focusing on motion control systems. For the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) project, developed a downlink team for the robotic arm and sampling systems, drove over 1km on Mars, sequenced over 100 surface contact science robotic arm operations. Best known for leading investigations into in-flight mechanical anomalies and for restoring the project's (and by extension, humanity's) sub-surface drilling capability after parts of the drill system ceased to function with age. More recently, as the Mechanical Flight System Systems Engineer for the Europa Clipper project, led development and V&V of solar array motion control capability, led major project-level engineering design changes, and drove mission-critical changes to attitude control parameters to ensure adequate margins for both structural stress and controllability. In short, I’m the guy who proved that the Europa Clipper spacecraft can safely fly its mission.Expertise: Spacecraft design, testing, and operation; requirements definition; interface definition; validation and verification (V&V); spacecraft anomaly investigation; motor control systems; mission formulation and proposal; guidance navigation and control; robotics; sensor integration; simulation and analysis; computer vision; image processing; multi-disciplinary design optimization, Monte-Carlo analysis; Kalman filter design; CAD modeling; embedded system design; C, C++, Linux shell scripting, Matlab, Simulink, Python, JavaScript; Solidworks; DOORS NG

Teaching AssociateCalifornia Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo Sep 2008 - Jun 2009Taught 'Introduction to Aerospace Design', a sophomore-level class which covers aircraft and spacecraft design fundamentals, systems engineering, and Matlab programming. Lectured 6 hours per week. Designed lectures, assignments, projects, and exams, conducted office hours, and evaluated student performance. -
Research TechnicianNaval Postgraduate School, Unmanned Systems Lab Jun 2004 - Sep 2008Developed software architecture for sonar-based autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) navigation. Created real-time sonar processing, object tracking, and navigation filter programs. Programmed Matlab scripts for simulation and post-processing of AUV mission data.Designed and modeled next-generation AUV hull and mechanical interfaces, created machine drawings and worked directly with machinists to fabricate the vehicle. Developed and tested the vehicle power system. -
Research AssistantNaval Postgraduate School, Ocean Acoustics Lab Jul 2005 - Jun 2006Developed tools to aid marine biologists in studying the behavior of marine mammals and responses to naval activities by detecting and analyzing marine mammal vocalizations recorded at the Navy's San Clemente Island Undersea Range. Authored acoustic signal processing tools, graphical-user-interfaces for visualizing and cataloging detected vocalizations, and localization algorithms for tracking individual or pods of marine mammals.
