Performing the duties of a Solutions Analyst at Online Business Systems in the Simulation Modeling team required a high level of independence throughout each day. The Simulation Modeling team was formed in response to a chorus of client interest in the benefits that could be found, both operationally and in project design stages. Having been the only new hire for the team chosen to fill the crucial role of lead modeller, the team was cemented at five. This team size, along with team member availability, meant there were numerous opportunities to wear many hats: client liaison, solution designer, software developer, QA, meeting organizer, and secretary. Due to the emerging nature of the position input was often desired on development of projects, success of the tools being used, solutions to problems in methodology, and for lessons learned from each assignment. Several opportunities were taken to deliver presentations on the evolution of the position within the team along with Business Analyst related topics, all to extremely positive reviews emphasizing my presentation skills.

Teaching English as a Second Language to students in China required patience and compassion. Classes ranged in size from 2 to 22 students with an age gap from 2 to 40+ years old, at times having to adapt intended course content to match curricula and student learning needs. Choosing appropriate teaching aids was crucial to lesson success for engagement and overcoming language barriers - games, items, toys, videos, music. Being able to creatively alter a lesson plan while in the process of teaching is often necessary when an intended plan seems inappropriate for the students' level or behaviour. Teachers from 5 of the 7 continents helped each other overcome discipline or methodology challenges using their varied styles and experiences. Learning the language to be self-sufficient and becoming immersed in the local culture were two of the most enjoyable parts of living abroad.

Working with the dedicated team at JGR Optics was an opportunity to apply and improve knowledge of fibre optics and waveforms. By employing this expanded knowledge, in-house automated testing software was updated, customized and optimized for quality assurance of new products and repairs of customer equipment. Based on this improved in-house testing suite, a specialized training tool for international representatives was also deployed for use in overseas training sessions. It was necessary to become intimately familiar with the hardware of all products, routinely removing casings to investigate components during debugging. Constructed components of all products in the factory and performed quality assurance measurements on products before sale.

Having the opportunity to work with and learn from the medical physics team at the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre was an inspiring experience. Among the tasks completed during this opportunity was co-developing a novel quality assurance software suite for cancer radiotherapy treatment plans designed by the medical physicists. The time savings in the workload for the physicists went from hours-long traditional manual quality assurance checks to that of minutes using the flexible software suite. Additionally, quality assurance measurements were performed on 4 multi-million dollar linear accelerators weekly to ensure their safety and effectiveness for patient treatment.

Assisting in research and analysis as part of a small collaborative team in the Climate Research Division at the Environment Canada - Downsview Office, duties and accomplishments included developing a unique detection algorithm for storm centres over the Canadian Prairies through the 19th-21st centuries, performing quantitative analysis of algorithm results based on location and number of storm centres over the Canadian Prairies, automating the acquisition, distribution and utilization of gridded pressure data required for analysis of that time period, and visualizing algorithm calculations using gridded colour maps generated by custom software.

Mississauga, Ontario

Engaged in research at the Xerox Research Centre of Canada as part of the physics team meant having to balance performing research, assisting colleagues, participating in cross-department functions and attending weekly meetings. Main research goals of the position were to characterize the usefulness and limitations of a novel equipment for toner printing testing and evaluate properties of varied toner chemicals under a specific array of application conditions. Operating a Tunnelling Electron Microscope to measure toner particle properties before and after testing and successfully writing software to run a stepper motor to automate future testing procedures were additional achievements.
