I previously worked as a Youth and Family Advocate for Cathedral Home for Children. As a Youth and Family Advocate I provided Wraparound facilitation, Case Management, and Independent Living services to some of the most vulnerable populations in our community. I worked on behalf of clients with mental health diagnoses, emotional and behavioral disorders, and youth in court-ordered out of home placements to build self-sufficiency. The focus of all of the work that I did was client empowerment. I worked intensively with my clients on skill building to give them the tools to continue pursuing their goals without creating dependency. I enjoyed seeing the clients I worked with gain the skills and self-confidence to take ownership of their plans and learn how to advocate for their needs to be met.

I previously worked a Paraprofessional for Indian Paintbrush Elementary School in the Albany County School District. My role was to provide one-on-one instruction and behavioral training to these students, and to create a safe and stable environment in which they can process complicated emotions. Our ultimate goal is to help our students develop the tools to respond to challenging circumstances in a socially acceptable manner. In my position, I have had the good fortune to see several of my students progress in their emotional well-being and gain the valuable social skills needed to be successful. My calm, consistent manner and excellent conflict management skills have been invaluable in creating a relationship of trust with my students. The trust that I develop with my students is essential in enabling them to learn to express their emotions in a healthy and acceptable manner and thereby grow in their ability to function confidently in unexpected circumstances. It has been extremely rewarding to watch the growth of my students into emotionally healthy and successful students. I am grateful for the interpersonal, conflict management, and communication skills that I have gained in this position. I am confident that my time as a Paraprofessional has prepared me to calmly and effectively engage in difficult circumstances in any future workplace.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters, I worked in an after-school program for at-risk Junior High and High school students. My primary responsibilities were mentoring, teaching and activity planning. I developed many strong relationships with the teens in our program who had very few positive adult role models in their lives. It was extremely rewarding to develop trust with our students and encourage them towards making positive changes in their lives.

I developed my business management skills working at Target. I began as a sales floor team member and made a habit of consistently seeking more responsibility. By providing excellent results with the responsibilities I was given I was promoted through several different positions. At the time I left Target, I held the position of team lead of the meat and produce departments. My responsibilities included scheduling, ordering, developing strategies to increase sales, providing corrective action to insure a strong team environment and overseeing the store while the manager was not present. In my last year as a team lead I increased my department’s sales by 3 percent. I did this while maintaining a receipt to sales ratio (quantity purchased to quantity sold) of 120%. I established a culture of food safety that resulted in consistently improving food safety audit scores. I achieved these strong results by creating a culture in my department where everyone built on one another’s work. This resulted in an environment where my team felt comfortable and set up for success. Consequently, my team felt ownership in our success and took great pride in their work.
