Profile bio

About Ryan Ainsworth

I am a skilled geophysicist with industry experience in Deepwater and Unconventional reservoirs. In my career I have held roles within exploration, appraisal, production, and a functional support role. I have the unique ability to extract relevant information from seismic data to characterize the subsurface. I am proficient using 2D/3D seismic data to map stratigraphy and create structure maps. My area of expertise is using quantitative interpretation (QI) techniques to gain a better understanding of rock and fluid properties within reservoirs. I am proven to be able to effectively communicate and collaborate across functions to execute concurrent projects with high levels of analysis and attention to detail, maximizing performance, minimizing risk, and achieving objectives on time and within budget. Core competencies include: • Collaboration • Data Analysis • Risk Management • Problem Solving • Client Relationship and Project Management • QI Geophysics • Well log analysis and interpretation • 2D/3D/4D Seismic mapping and interpretation • Rock Physics • Process Improvement • Seismic well ties • AVO analysis/inversion and interpretation • Written and verbal communication • Reservoir Characterization • Geohazard assessment • Data Conditioning

Listed skills include Matlab, Seismology, Physics, Petroleum Geology, and 14 others.

Geoscientist (Reservoir Services)

Current

Houston, Texas, United States

Mar 2023 - Present

Specialist Geophysicist Ii - Trinidad Exploration And Appraisal

Bhp

Houston, Texas, United States

Collaborated across two multidisciplinary teams to define and execute the geophysical scope of work needed to successfully meet teams’ objectives and ensure the results, limitations, and value of analysis were well understood. • Characterized untested amplitude anomalies, and provided better understanding of fluid/lithology effects, and ranges/uncertainty of seismic amplitudes and polarity in the overpressured oil window which was used in well planning and VRV (Volume, Risk, Value) analysis • Derived probability volumes of predicted lithology and fluid fill from seismic AVO attributes. These volumes were used to quantify the uncertainty in the lithology and fluid predictions and inform net to gross values away from well control in the geomodel.• Provided QI/amplitude analysis for identification of shallow hazards and well placement for well planning teams.• Oversaw all QI work with outside contractors in support of appraisal activities to ensure products delivered were at their technical limit, on time, and within budget• Interpreted and refined horizons in support of seismic net pay calculations for volumetric estimations

Jul 2018 - Jul 2021

Specialist Geophysicist Ii - Geophysical Business Support

Bhp

Houston, Texas, United States

Provided Geophysical and QI support for Deepwater, Unconventional, and Mining assets that contributed to multiple Deepwater discoveries and improved understanding of unconventional assets.• Completed a full QI analysis from rock physics to seismic inversion and characterization and interpretation of amplitude anomalies in the Exmouth Basin LJ85-LJ100 intervals which helped inform the decision on whether or not to exit the Basin. • Saved the company $100K to $300K per project by learning the workflow for running and interpreting both relative and absolute AVO seismic inversions internally. In addition to the saving this lead to more trust and efficiency in final products than if outsourced to a third party provider.• Lead efforts to calibrate seismic amplitudes in both the Haynesville and Eagleford shale plays through comprehensive QI studies which established links between the AVO attributes and seismic net pay results with engineering, petrophysical, and geological parameters. These results were integrated into the geomodel to help inform reservoir properties away from well control.• Directly informed decisions related to allocating money/resources towards reprocessing and inversion projects by creating synthetic models and feasibility studies to establish potential value and limits of data • Delivered a 4D seismic amplitude study in a producing field in the Gulf of Mexico that helped identify how production modified the oil water contact over time and detect new segments to drill.• Consulted and worked with coal mining asset during the processing and interpretation of their 3D seismic survey to ensure full potential of seismic data was realized.

Sep 2015 - Sep 2018

Specialist Geophysicist I - Eagleford: Production Unit

Bhp

Houston, Texas, United States

Provided geophysical support and analysis to geologists and engineers for surveillance reviews, permitting, and wells being drilled in the Blackhawk field.• Implemented a process improvement on the depth conversion workflow that contributed to an average landing accuracy of 8 feet and no Buda hits for wells drilled during my tenure.• Computed synthetic well ties across the field and used them to map key horizons and faults.• Extracted seismic attributes to help identify highly fractured areas resulting in enhance porosity and lateral changes in rock properties.• Delivered shallow hazard assessments to the drill planning teams to ensure wells were not being drilled into faults or shallow gas charged zones.

Jul 2014 - Sep 2015

Specialist Geophysicist I - Shenzi Field: Gulf Of Mexico Production Unit

Bhp

Houston, Texas, United States

Provided seismic interpretation of late Miocene and salt intervals, and opportunity generation and maturation of prospects in the Shenzi field. In addition to providing input and QC to seismic processing efforts• Seismic interpretations and structure maps received functional endorsement and were used to form the framework of the geomodel• Progressed a prospect to the point in which a recommendation could be made on drilling based on risk of reservoir presence, quality, and container boundaries using proven methods.

Jul 2013 - Jul 2014

Graduate Research Assistant

I operated and maintained a broadband seismic array which included collecting, processing, and updating a seismic database, along with computing P & S receiver functions for a project along the Gulf Coast of Texas.• Results from this work contributed to multiple publications for both myself, other students, and professors

Jul 2011 - Jun 2013

Intern Geophysicist

Greater Denver Area

• Reservoir characterization, and development of a multivariate predictive statistical model identifying areas of enhanced productivity in the Middle Bakken and Upper Three Forks reservoirs, through the integration of multiple data types primarily, extracted seismic attributes.
