About Ryan Meadows

I worked at Fuller's Music Store in New Bern From May, 2021 to May, 2022. This experence taught me how to manage deliveries and maintain retail stock. My expertise was in managing and maintaining the instruments. I was in charge of cleaning used instruments and preparing them for re-sale along with preparing new instruments; both student and professional. During the Covid-19, pandemic I was in charge of manually filling mask orders which was sometimes thousands of individually packaged product. I worked as a mechanical engineering intern with Fleet Readiness Center East (FRCE) during the summer of 2022. This experience gave me skills in getting quotes for aviation projects related to C-130 support equipment. I was able to use CAD to design a successor to the old C-130 tie-down set, used in high wind situations. I also reviewed procedural documents for errors to ensure artisans are given the right information for a job. I worked as a materials engineering intern with FRCE during the summer of 2023 and 2024. During this time, I worked with other materials engineers to learn about corrosion inhibiting processes, corrosion stripping processes, non-destructive technology, chemical analysis, and failure analysis. I was assigned for both rotations to do research on magnesium treatment to act as a potential successor to the current solution if the chemical needed to make the solution ran out before magnesium was entirely replaced by composites. This research gave me experience making these magnesium treatment solutions from the ground up, using these to get a high-grade treatment on magnesium specimen. For my second rotation, I additionally worked with the NDI specialist to co-write and research post-penetrant testing (PT) etchants and blasting processes on various metals. Our published reports can help decide a procedure for off-site etching to preform a crack detection test with PT if the FRCE etchant is not available. I worked with international paper in pulp manufacturing. During this internship, I was assigned 20+ projects across the woodyard, pulping stage, bleaching stage, and ClO2 generation. I was able to determine where unallocated ClO2 was in the pipelines and was able to replace faulty valves. I was able to recreate the 5S auditing procedure for over half of the entire mill using VBA in excel to combine manually imputed text and sort it by the shift in charge of cleaning the area and importance. This new process would simplify hours of manual work into about 5 minutes without any prior experience using the software.

  • Fleet Readiness Center East

Fleet Readiness Center East May 2024 - Jul 2024
    Havelock, North Carolina, United States
For this internship I was in a role where I worked with the NDI specialist James McCoy. I researched, synthesized, and tested various chemical etches for magnesium, aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, and Inconel. I researched, built, and tested a magnesium treatment solution to be used as a potential successor to the solution currently in use. Additionally, I assisted in a sand/particle blast study and a ceramic paint study. These research projects allowed me to work with artisans and engineers to understand what information is important to analyze and how to report the analysis. On top of reporting and researching, I was also instructed on how to use nondestructive testing instruments (Ultrasound, Magnetic particle, X-ray, thermal, and Penetrant) and corrosion removal instruments (sand Blasting and class 4 lasers).
  • International Paper
    Chemical Engineering Intern
    International Paper Aug 2023 - Dec 2023
    Georgetown, South Carolina, United States
During this internship, I was able to work closely with other chemical engineers and learn about a career in industrial manufacturing. I was occasionally in charge of reporting the morning presentations for the pulp manufacturing side of the process. I worked with a portable flowmeter to collect flowrate data on pipes containing ClO2, a hazardous and expensive bleaching agent, because there was unallocated ClO2 somewhere in the process. I was able to report data showing that there were some valves that were letting too much chemical through and making the bleaching process very expensive. This data was used to change valves and make the process easier to manage. Another project I was assigned was to optimize the 5S audit reporting procedure for the pulp mill. In the pulp mill, they use excel to type out notes that were made during a 5S audit. To report this data, someone would have to manually take a few hours and manually sort the data collected throughout the week and present it to each of the 4 shifts. Using a macro-enabled excel sheet, I was able to combine all of the important data and filter it out by significance and shift role. This sheet was able to keep the exact same formatting and auditing process while making the report take about 5 minutes to make. I presented my work to the entire mill and the power generation side of the mill wanted it for their 5S auditing process as well. I was able to recreate the excel sheet for their auditing process and present it in my last 2 work days at International Paper.

I worked heavily in their chemistry lab. I was able to learn all the procedures involved in testing the tanks in their plating shop. I built an excel sheet that would do the necessary math and show what additions are needed to make the plating tank on the upper end of its chemical concentrations, the optimal concentrations and the minimal concentrations. This would be used to help save time in doing the calculations needed to see the numbers and focus more on what numbers meet the plating tank's needs in the company. I also started doing research on their magnesium treatment tank and was able to determine the optimal ratio of chemical to be added for optimal paint adherence. This project would continue to my 2024 internship here. I was able to write a quote for a lab electroplating system and work with artisans to get magnesium specimen painted and blasted for expiramentation.

This internship was split between working with other interns to learn the fundamentals of mechanical engineering and working with a FRCE fleet support team (FST). I worked with other interns to compete against other intern groups to design working area for artisans doing minor maintenance on an engine transport cart. The FST team I was assigned to was the C-130 ground support equipment team with John Mock. I was assigned to organize information, review procedural update papers, and redesign the C-130 tiedown set. Additionally, I planned an off-site tour with my team to an Airforce air station to look at their C-130 maintenance process and understand what they use as a high-wind tie-down set. It was found that they use equipment that hold up to 3000 lbs, which was significantly different than what was used at FRCE (10,000 lbs). I spoke with many outside contractors to get the information needed to finalize a successor with prices and present my findings.
