I have worked in the hospitality and restaurant industry since I was 19yrs old. After my successful completion of my AA degree at Tallahassee Community College, I went on to study Film, English, and Hospitality Services at Florida State University (Go Nole's!). It was a long road but working at a restaurant enabled me to support myself and pay for my schooling. After college I moved back to the beaches in Florida and got a bartending gig straightaway, but at this point in my life I found myself at a crossroads. What am I going to do with my life? Should I start looking for a career? Mind you, I am only a couple years out of college. Most people tell you how fun your 20's are, but what they forget to add is how difficult they can be. You're not fully an adult yet (and if you say, "oh yes I am!", then you're probably in your 20's right now), but you're definitely not a kid anymore. There is a lot of hypocrisy from people. They tell you to "Go be an adult", or "it's time you act like an adult now". Then they turn around and treat you like you're still a teenager. But just when my head was spinning and I was about to rip my hair out, my cousin in Omaha, Nebraska called me up. He says, "I've opened up a sushi joint in Omaha. Would you like to move up here and work for me?" I was (maybe still am a little bit) stubborn and prideful. So it took another few phone calls until I said, "yes, lets do it!" Two weeks later I had given away most of my belongings and flew to Omaha. I arrived in Omaha on a Saturday in June, it was 2006. Two days later I was at work and starting my training. Now, I can say I work for a great company and I made the best decision for myself at that time. Plus, now I'm able to say that I have helped a company grow, and that that company has helped me grow too. I met and married my wife here in Omaha, and we've got two daughters now. If there is anything that I've learned in my crazy, kitchen-confidential life, it's that we can only keep trying. You stumble and fall, and you get back up and try again.
