I work in East Lothian Council Libraries, in a customer-facing role, and the variety of services provided by staff in my role have grown my skills in a number of ways. Some of these include:- Communication: the library has required me to listen to patrons explaining their issues and identify their needs, and also concisely explain necessary information to the patron, so they have a clear understanding of how our processes work and what is available to them.- Adaptability: I often pick up overtime when I can and this involves travelling to different branches and working days I would not usually. This led to me encountering processes and procedures I had not yet or not usually dealt with, and this helped me feel comfortable in my ability to adapt quickly to these changes and incorporate new information and skills into my work. I also was moved to a community hub for a few months during COVID, adapting to my new role and the unique procedures and responsibilities of working there.- Organisation: beginning very soon after I started in my position and continuing whenever COVID restrictions allowed, I run a Scratch code club for 8-12 year olds, and this required me to organise my work around the time allocated to leading the club, communicating clearly if I needed a team member to help with any work while I was indisposed, as well as ensuring all resources were prepared, available and in place each week. I also learned valuable teaching skills of patience and understanding working with the kids.
