As a young student I enjoyed learning, but always preferred it to be an individual experience. Reading and writing were always preferred tasks because they allowed me to look inwards, rather than share out. Throughout my higher education I had the opportunity to contemplate some intriguing concepts in human psychology such as motivation, information processing, and communication. This, coupled with my desire to help people, naturally led me into education. It was through my work with administrators, teachers, support staff, families, and directly with students themselves that I fully embraced the understanding that learning is a collaborative, ongoing process, not an isolated event. I became determined to spread the word to other passive learners like me.I took my love of puzzles, building, and creating into the classroom to embrace a problem solving approach to learning. I am a huge proponent of incorporating STEAM into everyday education, and have dedicated much of my career as a teacher in doing so. Working through the design process to solve real world problems empowers students to see the potential within themselves to change their world for the better.My greatest driving force as an educator, and human being in general, is to ensure all students have equitable access to a quality education. Working in a Title 1 school with a significant number of EL’s has shown me that this endeavor is not only worthwhile, but essential in creating a world where opportunity is not a product of your circumstances, but rather a result of your genuine effort. This mission, rooted in social justice, is one that I will continue to pursue both inside and outside of the classroom, and I look forward to applying my knowledge and experience in a multitude of ways to do so.
