The School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) is one of four United States Army schools that make up the United States Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. This "enormously rigorous" graduate school comprises two programs: the larger Advanced Military Studies Program (AMSP), and the Advanced Operational Art Studies Fellowship (AOASF), which more senior officers attend. The student body is small but diverse and comprises members of each of the U.S. armed forces, various U.S. Government agencies, and allied military forces. Graduates are colloquially known as "Jedi Knights".The school educates the future leaders of the U.S. Armed Forces, its Allies, and the Interagency at the graduate level to be agile and adaptive leaders who think critically at the strategic and operational levels to solve complex ambiguous problems.SAMS graduates are innovative leaders, willing to accept risk and to experiment. They are adaptive leaders who excel at the art of command and anticipate the future operational environment by applying critical & creative thinking skills in order to solve complex problems. All graduates demonstrate mastery of Operational Art and Doctrine and are able to synthesize the elements of US national power in Joint, Interagency, Intergovernmental and Multinational (JIIM) operations.

Maintain continuous situational awareness of SOCCENT joint and combined full spectrum military operations; synchronize J-Staff support to planning and execution of operations. Ensure the JOC communication architecture, facilities, personnel and procedures are in place to accomplish the J33 mission. Monitors, compiles, reviews and distributes daily key issues summary report. Coordinates, directs and answers RFI from SOCCENT Staff, SOF Components, SOCOM and CENTCOM Staffs. Create and release time sensitive AMHS messages as required. Serves as the Chief of Operations in the absence the J33. Serves as the central hub for SOCCENT's communication on current mission and ongoing crises in the CENTCOM AOR. Additionally assists in Information Operations as part of the SOCCENT J35.

Portfolio includes managing the Army's Communication Work Group (ACWG) which works across the Army Headquarters and with the Army senior leaders to identify the Army's top overarching public affairs priorities and to develop, socialize, integrate, synchronize, and vet overarching communication engagement strategies for those priorities, such as Modernization, BRAC, Efficiencies, ARFORGEN, etc. so that the Army speaks with one voice about them.

The JCS/OSD/ARSTAF intern program is a highly competitive/selective three-year program hosted by the Director of the Army Staff. Phase I – officers attend Georgetown University and obtain a Master of Policy Management. Students demonstrate their ability to integrate analytic and management tools to recommend solutions to specific policy problems. Phase II – officers serve on the Joint Staff or Office of the Secretary of Defense. Interns are integrated into the policy and operational activities of the nation's senior military staffs to give them a broader perspective of operations within the military and our government. This training prepares officers to serve more effectively in future staff positions within the Joint staff, the Services, or within other defense agencies. Phase III – Army Staff internship: interns spend the third and final year of the program working within the Army Staff. Like the Joint Staff and OSD staff, the Army Staff slates interns into demanding roles as lead action officers, calling upon their knowledge base to represent the Army within the Pentagon and throughout Department of Defense (DoD).

Worked as an action officer and had the lead in coordinating the weekly Pak-Af Federation Forum which brings together the best and brightest in DoD, Interagency, Academia, Think Tank, and Private industry, to frankly discuss the current issues ongoing in the Afghanistan and Pakistan area of operations. Speakers at this forum have included the late Ambassador Holbrooke, Ambassador Patterson, Dave Kilcullen, GEN McChrystal, and many other distinguished experts in the Pak-Af field.
