This role requires documenting the day-to-day functioning of the child, provides support based on identified goals of the child, and teaching/reinforcing daily living and relationship skills as well as implementing crisis intervention techniques when necessary.

My first job out of college was a mentor at a group home. As a young man in my first job, I doubted my ability to be assertive with troubled teens. Quickly, I adapted and found strength in my ability to make people laugh and through that ability I built relationships with the young men I served but also my co-workers. I began to more deeply understand principles like compassion and integrity. Effectively, I helped these young men advocate for their own needs and truly understand the meaning of efficacy (one's belief in the their own ability to create a change). Some of the young men I served went on to serve in Americorps, earn their first paychecks, serve as Ambassador's to their cities, and volunteer within their community to become valued members of our community.
