About Ryan Ringer

I am an experienced researcher in cognitive sciences and human factors psychology, specializing in visual attention, perception, and human performance. I received my MS and PhD Psychological Sciences from Kansas State University, and recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Wichita State University. I am proficient in several statistical packages (SPSS and JMP), but I primarily conduct my analyses in R and MatLab. I also have eleven years of eye-tracking experience, with expertise in eye movements, pupillometry, and gaze-contingent displays. My general research expertise includes revolves around visual processing in real-world environments, with applications in spectral image analysis, remote sensing, driving, divided attention, aging, and event/narrative comprehension. For my dissertation, I used this same tool to measure attentional fluctuations in response to videos of every-day events. Specifically, I measured changes in attention at "event boundaries" where updates to event representations are known to occur. During my postdoctoral fellowship, I investigated perceptual training protocols with older and younger adults, alike, while also extending my dissertation research into the realm of EEG. To deal with the messiness of data beyond the control of laboratory settings, I have developed an intimate knowledge of linear and generalized linear mixed modeling. This provides me with the ability to identify the overall trends in complex data, while also accounting for individual differences among people, test items, testing locations, and many other "random" variables. Furthermore, generalized linear mixed modeling (GLMM) allows me to specify the nature of the error distribution, providing accurate estimations of many types of data that are not normally distributed, like probabilities, time, counts, scales (e.g., Likert/survey scales), and many others. These skills work in concert with excellent verbal and written communication abilities, as I have authored multiple award-winning peer-reviewed articles, edited book chapters, and international conference publications. Furthermore, I have a wide range of teaching experience in higher education. I am hoping to apply my expertise naturalistic perception to aid in the development of advanced navigation systems, as well as designing more immersive and effective virtual training environments.
