Undergraduate Researcher
Tom Global Fellow
CurrentI am a member of Tikkun Olam Maker's 9-month International Leadership Program focused on training students to lead university communities of makers who seek to apply technology and innovation to solve unmet challenges faced by people with disabilities, the elderly, and vulnerable groups in their communities. As a fellow, I have been fortunate enough to have made a major impact on the TOM Student Organization at the University of Maryland. I was fortunate enough to be connected with Accenture's office in Arlington, Virginia to coordinate a build party for their day of volunteering. We manufactured parts utilizing sewing machines, laser cutters, and CNC machines in order to build 4 toddler mobility trainers which we distributed throughout the DMV Area. In addition, I have also helped the student organization with our year-long project in which we are working with a local student who is in a wheelchair to help him get into his car without the support of others in a frugal and effective manner. Outside of engineering pursuits, I helped the student organization get more organized, establishing clear defined roles for our executive board. I also lead our recruitment pursuits, nearly doubling our membership size during my tenure as a fellow. Lastly, I have also lead the charge in our partnership with the University of Maryland's Hillel in order to have support regarding recruitment, need knower outreach, and funding.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
I developed the Wheelchair Accessible Baby Cot, a modified standard Ikea crib designed with a sliding door and elevated to allow for frontal access by wheelchair users. This innovative design also features a secure locking mechanism to ensure the baby’s safety. I tailored the cot specifically for a new mother in a wheelchair, incorporating essential features that accommodate her limited fine motor skills.Through extensive workshop experience, I refined my carpentry and fabrication skills, becoming proficient in utilizing laser cutting and CNC machinery for efficient part production. My expertise in these areas enabled me to create high-quality components that enhance the overall design of the cot.I conducted thorough research on baby cot regulations across the United States, Israel, Canada, and the European Union to ensure compliance and safety. This led me to implement an iterative design process, where I developed nearly 50 different locking mechanism variations to guarantee both safety and adherence to U.S. regulations.Utilizing SolidWorks, I created and improved parts, generating precise models for prototyping and testing. Collaborating closely with an industrial designer, we enhanced the aesthetics of the cot, resulting in a sleek and user-friendly design. Additionally, I assisted with projects such as a hands-free stroller and a scale for wheelchair users, further demonstrating my commitment to inclusive design.
