As an Air Emission Testing Engineer, my role is to collect important data on air pollution for the power and manufacturing industries. We follow strict EPA guidelines and methods to ensure quality and accurate data. Working in this role has allowed me to learn how to manage the data in a way that our clients can understand.

The Small Grains Breeding Program at the University of Illinois, Champaign - Urbana, has a long history of making major genetic improvements in wheat and oat varieties. Using traditional selective breeding techniques, the program has made great strides in increasing disease resistance and grain yield. The program is run by Dr. Fredreric Kolb, who is a highly accredited professor with several awards for his work on wheat and oat breeding. As a Research Technician, I was responsible for keeping the program running. This role included making breeding selections, collecting important seasonal data, working in the greenhouse and harvesting test plots.

The University of Illinois Soybean Breeding program is known for making large genetic improvements in soybeans. Using a combination of modern and traditional breeding techniques, this program develops new varieties which are eventually released on the commercial market. The program also maintains experimental plots for other important genetic work. My role for the program included organizing, cleaning and counting seed packets, as well as, planting experimental plots.

The USDA Soybean Breeding and Germplasm Lab house's the largest collection of soybean varieties in the Midwest. Preserving this diversity is critical for discovering new genetic traits which can increase yield and productivity of the plants. As an Undergraduate Assistant, I was responsible for maintaining and organizing all of the different types of seed in the collection. This role included organizing, counting, sorting and active problem solving to ensure all need varieties were accessible.
