I grew up in a small town called Harrison, Ohio, and went to school in Northern Kentucky. My career path is arguably as straight as I am. It wasn't. I heard someone say that you really restart your adolescent years after you come out, especially right after high school like I did. I learned a lot about myself, and worked a good amount of jobs through undergrad to really figure it out. Turns out, I learned a few things.I'm going to cut to the chase and give a list of how I've learned I'm a quick study:Six years in the food service industry from serving to spending two years at McDonald's when I was 17. Food service teaches you a lot of patience, resourcefulness, and how to work well under pressure. I also worked in management for a year in food service.I also worked six years in retail. Two of those six years were spent in management.Now, I know what you're thinking. The math isn't adding up. I was working two part-time jobs while going to undergrad full time to pay bills. I learned what perserverence was and followed through on my commitment to school.Fastforward to the start of the pandemic. Times were tough, so I stepped out of my comfort zone. I have a BA in Psychology, but Human Services jobs weren't an option. I started working in the Sample Management department at PPD and loved what impact I was making. I also felt relieved to know that I was working for an openly inclusive company, and felt like I was making a difference in clinical research.I've been working at PPD for two years in July of 2022, three promotions later and I'm now a Sample Management Lead. I make a point to always be consistent with my work, be open minded and communicate with my team. I'm a firm believer in "the squeaky wheel gets the grease". If there's any takeaway from my degree, it's that I don't have to work in Human Services to put my degree at work. One of the key components of a successful relationship is communication!
