Ryan Summers has been active in Music Education as a Band Director, Instructor, Music Arranger, and Adjudicator since 2000. Ryan's middle school bands have included enrollments of over 300 members. The students have been accepted into honor bands at the county, district, and state levels. The bands have earned consecutive Superior ratings in both Grade III and IV music at North Carolina Bandmaster’s Association Music Performance Adjudication. Both his middle school and high school Jazz ensembles have earned Superior ratings in various festivals including the NCBA Jazz MPA.While completing his Master's degree at Western Carolina University, Ryan taught Brass Pedagogy courses to rising music educators, and served as a Graduate Assistant in several other music courses. Along with those duties, he also taught music and marching with Pride of the Mountains Marching Band.Ryan became involved with the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps in 1997. He performed in both the Baritone and Contra sections and then earned a position on Crown’s Brass Faculty in 2001. In 2003, the corps began a steady climb to become one of the elite organizations within Drum Corps International, eventually winning the DCI World Championship in 2013. Along the way, Crown’s Brass Section received the Jim Ott Memorial Award for Excellence in Brass in 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013.Currently, Ryan composes and arranges music, writes drill, and assists in show design for several bands in the south east United States. He frequently judges band competitions, and festivals, in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Mr. Summers is a member of the North Carolina Bandmasters’ Association where he served on the Executive Board of the Northwest District, and he is currently the chair of the NCBA Marching Band Committee. His other professional affiliations include the North Carolina Music Educator’s Association and the National Association for Music Education.
