Profile bio

About Ryan Tapping

I've always been fascinated by physics, and pursued this interest professionally with my research and PhD work. My main area of focus was spintronics, where I have honed my nanofabrication skills and depth of understanding of magnetic materials and spin transfer torques. Generally, I enjoy quantitative reasoning ranging from theoretical modeling to real-world statistics problems. One of my other interests has always been how the mind works, where I also took additional courses in psychology. I discovered my passion of physics education research, which combines my love for physics and psychology. So alongside my PhD research in spintronics, I have also pursued education research to better understand how students can learn and love the physics that brought me here. For my spintronics research, I required understanding quantum mechanics and spin angular momentum, as well as using technical skill such as data analysis using Origin and python. I also regularly used nanofabrication techniques including photolithography, sputtering, electron-beam lithography/microscopy/evaporation, and atomic force microscopy, among others. For my education research I required a different set of analytical skills that included python and R coding, statistical analytical skills, regression analysis, organizing large data sets, as well as interpersonal skills for interviews and discussions with both educators and students alike. My mission is to share my passions through teaching, and to learn from everyone ranging from coworkers and colleagues, to students and professors, and my family and friends!

Listed skills include Data Analysis, Microsoft Office, Science, Statistics, and 5 others.
