Located on the UGA campus, Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS) is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of campus-wide technology solutions. Within EITS, the Systems Administration group is tasked with configuring and maintaining all Red Hat/CentOs Linux and Windows server environments and associated services. My role as a Principal within the Systems Administration group has generally been focused on upgrading and maintaining the UGA web hosting infrastructure. Duties include:♦ Primary architect and support engineer of a shared web hosting environment comprised of over six hundred web sites and heterogeneous content management platforms, to include: Drupal, ExpressionEngine, Wordpress, and all associated Apache httpd and MySQL/MariaDB database services and NFS storage technologies.♦ Primary support engineer of the UGA Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP architecture that hosts the main campus web site, www.uga.edu.♦ Creation and management of SVN and git version control repositories for both internal EITS and external campus-wide clients.♦ Development, testing, and implementation of automated system configuration management routines using Puppet and Ansible. ♦ Research and development of DevOps procedures in conjunction with EITS developers, to include Openstack based internal cloud environments and Linux containerization via Docker.♦ Installation and configuration of Red Hat/CentOs Linux servers in a VMWare virtualized production environment. ♦ Provide assistance to team members and campus clients as needed with existing technologies, to include: version control systems (SVN, git), Perl, PHP, Java, MySQL/MariaDB, Apache httpd, and Tomcat.♦ Provide instruction and direction to junior administrators as needed, particularly in regards to EITS web technologies and hosting support issues.

Upon first joining the team at EITS, my responsibilities were quite varied as the group was much larger and responsible for many more legacy technologies than it is today. Technologists were required to address a wide range of multi-platform challenges on a daily basis. My role within the Systems Administration group was generally focused on maintaining and executing data pipelines, but included:♦ Maintenance, expansion, and execution of PERL/Java data pipelines facilitating the population of data into the Blackboard Vista Online Learning Environment, referred to as E-Learning Commons, or eLC, on the UGA campus.♦ Researching API support for current data pipeline requirements in the next generation of eLC, Desire2Learn, and participating in technical planning sessions regarding the upcoming implementation of this new system.♦ Automation of routine system administration tasks via the Puppet configuration management system♦ Primary support of the UGA web hosting architecture and tier-3 support of UGA webhosting clients including the primary campus web site, www.uga.edu.♦ Daily system administration tasks related to the continuity of mission critical campus services: DHCP, DNS, version control systems, Apache httpd and Tomcat.

Funded by the National Health Institute and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Kissinger Research Group maintains a compliment of six web sites and associated databases housing the genetic data of parasitic organisms. The research group is small but the goals of the project are aggressive, hence team members are required to function in multiple roles. Grant funding reductions eliminated my position with the group, but while there my participation on the team was diverse, to include:♦ Software development tasks in PERL and SQL specific to the creation of data pipelines to facilitate the bulk loading of bioinformatics data into Oracle databases.♦ Testing and execution of data pipelines, subsequently ensuring the integrity of new data stores, maintaining and updating data stores as new data becomes available from the scientific community.♦ Design, development, and implementation of a web-based interface for database scheduling of system status announcements across all project web sites.♦ Development, documentation, and distribution within the bioinformatics community of a PERL based software suite facilitating end user loading of bulk data gene data into MySQL and Oracle databases.♦ System administration tasks: creating user accounts, maintaining desktop and server hardware, and recommending desktop backup solutions

The Athens Banner-Herald is a daily newspaper located in Athens, GA. As such it is a 24x7x365 production facility housing a mix of desktop and server systems and a myriad of industry-specific technologies. As the sole systems administrator at this facility, my duties were considerable and quite varied, to include:♦ Administration of a mission critical data center comprised of Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Sun Microsystems Solaris, Linux, and Apple OS X technologies.♦ Implementation and administration of Hewlett Packard, Apple, and Sun Microsystems RAID data storage systems.♦ Analysis and streamlining of production data workflows via PERL scripting.♦ Design and implementation of critical data backup and integrity check routines to ensure business continuity.♦ Cooperative administration of Sybase and MySQL database technologies.♦ Management of a switched 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet network of over two hundred nodes.♦ Creation and enforcement of IT security and best practice policies.♦ Preparation and presentation of IT strategy and budgetary requirements.♦ Research and recommendation of new technologies to executive management.Accomplishments Include:♦ Development of a PERL/MySQL based database application to efficiently track systems security access of newly hired and terminated employees by the human resources, information technology, and building maintenance departments.♦ Key team participant for two major front-end systems implementations in the classified advertising department, and site team lead for a major system implementation in the news editorial department
