About Ryan Tymkow
I am recent mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Alberta. I have a passion for developing innovative solutions to challenging engineering problems, and pride myself on pushing for greatness in everything that I do.I have demonstrated myself as an individual with strong technical competencies capable of using a wide range of software and design tools to drive forward novel solutions to problems I am faced with.As a member of the U of A Aerospace Design Club, I applied DFMA principals and use advanced design techniques including additive manufacturing and topology optimization to develop lightweight, high strength components which pushed the limits of what was possible. I am currently conducting research with the Center for Design of Advanced Materials, where I am developing novel solutions using machine learning to analyze the properties of state-of-the-art additive manufactured ceramics. At EPCOR, I demonstrated myself as a capable engineer and project manager, working on solutions to challenges for Edmonton's drainage system, and overseeing complex projects at EPCOR's water treatment plants. At Stream Flo Industries, I demonstrated myself as a competent and capable engineer capable of developing novel techniques to improve processes in a manufacturing setting.I strive for greatness in everything that I do, and I can't wait to apply my skills and to never stop learning wherever my career takes me!

Research Assistant - Center For Design Of Advanced Materials
My research focus was on developing a machine-learning model which can predict the macro-scale structural properties of additively manufactured ceramics by observing the microstructural features from computed tomography (CT) scans. As of July 2024, this work is currently ongoing and expected to be completed by early August. I am working with my supervisors and plan to have a paper related to this research submitted for publishing later this summer. Key tasks involved with this project are summarized below. • Developed a Python script to extract random regions of material CT scans to develop a training dataset.• Utilized Abaqus CAE finite element analysis (FEA) to generate a dataset of material strength properties and stress fields by conducting finite element analysis of the extracted regions under loading.• Completed experimental compressive material testing of alumina ceramic samples to determine stress-strain properties.• Validated the FEA model through comparison with the experimentally obtained data.• (In Progress) Development of a TensorFlow convolutional neural network (CNN) which can predict the material properties of the additively manufactured ceramics.
Aero Design Club - Design Team Member
• Utilized DATCOM to predict aircraft stability coefficients.• Developed dynamic stability control system for aircraft using dynamic stability model and Simulink. • Used SolidWorks to develop high-performance manufacturable components and subassemblies.• Utilize topology optimization and 3D printing to develop a motor mount with minimized mass and sufficient strength.• Competed in SAE Aero West competition in Van Nuys, California.o Placed 3rd overall for micro class, and placed 2nd for our team’s technical report.
Engineering Co-Op: Drainage
• Developed algorithms to estimate pump station flow rates based off of depth sensor values• Assisted with managing and executing the Edmonton Low Impact Development program to install green infrastructure throughout the city, including overseeing construction, site inspections, and participating in design concept and detail design generation.• Analyzed project financial and program financial trends to identify areas for cost improvement• Created Excel Macros to automate internal processes, improving team productivity• Utilized FME and Arc Pro to automate spatial data processing tasks, saving significant labour time manually identifying critical features such as swales located on properties which are at risk of flooding • Researched and developed standards and documentation to guide development of green infrastructure in Edmonton
Engineering Co-Op: Project Management
• Managed the finances and execution of a project constructing low impact development drainage ponds• Coordinated and assisted with project management activities for the construction and commissioning a new orthophosphate chemical injection system• Organized meetings with contractors, internal stakeholders, and design consultants to ensure successful project execution
Engineering Co-Op: Quality Engineering
• Developed and documented engineering procedures for manufacturing processes• Independently researched and developed new procedures for the surface finishing of valve components• Developed intuitive visualizations for manufacturing procedures using Creo CAD• Coordinated with technicians, quality control, and engineering to verify the effectiveness of new procedures
Farming Operator And Operations Planner
• Planned and executed crop, fertilizer, and chemical applications to optimize yield• Supported operations and maintenance of farm equipment year-round
