Ryan Van Olst focuses his practice on a wide variety of trademark, copyright, and unfair competition issues including trademark prosecution before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), appeals before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB), and federal litigation. While at Kelly IP, Ryan worked on a variety of trademark and unfair competition issues for clients ranging from small startup owners to international Fortune 500 companies. Ryan's practice included proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB), trademark investigation and enforcement, and federal litigation. Before the TTAB he drafted Notices of Opposition and responsive documents. He acquired extensive prosecution experience before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) while drafting substantive responses to Office Actions and Letters of Protest. Ryan drafted and revised submissions for federal litigation including discovery requests and responses, pleadings, and temporary restraining orders. He also performed extensive legal research and summarized the latest legal precedents on a variety of issues for use in trademark litigation and prosecution proceedings.Prior to joining Kelly IP, Ryan represented clients by crafting responses to USPTO Office Actions and drafting interrogatories and discovery requests for trademark and trade dress lawsuits. He helped develop international trademark policy while working at the International Intellectual Property Institute (IIPI) with former PTO Commissioner Bruce Lehman. He also served as a Research Assistant with the International Trademark Association (INTA) Brands and Innovation Presidential Task Force. While at American University’s Washington College of Law, Ryan was president of the Intellectual Property Law Society. He served as a Dean’s Fellow for the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property (PIJIP) and as a Law Student Liaison for the American Intellectual Property Association (AIPLA). Ryan has been published in Landslide and other national publications for articles on trademark issues ranging from the impact of federal truth-in-labeling practices to the pro bono representation of the Redskins in a landmark federal trademark lawsuit.
