About Ryan Welch

My current interests are found at the intersection of additive manufacturing and multifunctional materials. I have gained experience in this area by investigating process-structure-property relationships using laser powder bed fusion on thermoelectric materials. Thermoelectric materials are unique, solid-state energy conversion materials that can be used to generate electricity from heat or use electricity to pump heat. Laser powder bed fusion is a potential avenue to engineer nano- and microscale features that alter the materials' properties. To elucidate the process-structure-property relationship, I design experiments and characterize the materials structure down to the atomic level to understand how the process parameters change the structure. In turn, the material structure will determine the mechanical and thermal properties. Combined with my previous 10 years of experience in the Air Force, I aspire to find a position that will offer me the ability to lead research teams to design and implement new technology for our future.
