My name is Ryan Buchmann and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in the great state of California. I received my masters degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in 2007 and I became licensed as a therapist in 2011. In addition to my education as an MFT, I also hold a masters degree in Pastoral Care and Counseling from the University of San Diego which I received in 2005. Further, I am certified as an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor through the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP).Since I received my degree in Pastoral Counseling, I have strived to integrate spirituality with therapy. I believe that human suffering is part of life, but by making a simple shift in thinking and believing, we can alleviate the suffering we are experiencing in the moment. By becoming more aware of the moments in which we are suffering, we can repeatedly implement this shift in thinking until it becomes a habit. In other words, we condition ourselves to believe and behave differently and eventually the suffering diminishes. In so few words, this is the teaching of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. We accept that the present moment is as it is and allow it to be without getting consumed by our emotional response to it. Then we commit to removing the emotional and belief-based barriers that prevent us from living up to our values, that which we have determined to be important to us. By mastering this ability on a consistent basis, we can move toward more peace in life.
