Baseball Performance Research AssociateLouisiana Tech University Oct 2020 - PresentHuman Performance LaboratoriesAdvisor to graduate research in the realm of baseball health and performance. The Human Performance Laboratories at Lousiana Tech offers a comprehensive assessment platform for baseball studies that includes 3D biomechanics, applied physiology to evaluate metabolism and functional strength, as well as motor learning infrastructure to examine stability, reaction time and other forms of coordination and perceptual-motor testing. The lab is headed by Dr. David Szymanski, a decorated publication author in the field of baseball performance and current Department Chair and Professor of Kinesiology. At present, our research focus is on multiplanar, unilateral and bilateral jump qualities and their influence on pitching biomechanics. -
Baseball Performance Research AssociateAuckland University Of Technology Sep 2019 - PresentSports Performance Research Institute New ZealandAdvisor to graduate students studying at AUT SPRINZ in the realm of baseball health and performance. Current research undertaking is identifying the role of weighted sleeves in improving shoulder specific strength and throwing velocity. The Department is headed by Dr. John Cronin, a well-established researcher in sports performance with over 450 articles and 18000 citations. -
Director Of Performance IntegrationLos Angeles Angels Nov 2018 - Jan 2021Greater Los Angeles AreaOrganizational strategist applying both evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence to integrate into coaching, training, clinical care and talent identification. My key responsibilities were the following; (1) overseeing the strength and conditioning department, (2) ensuring that we had a strong educational stream organizationally (independently provided 77 lectures and invited in 81 speakers to comprise more than 150 hours worth of content), (3) overseeing a systematic way of monitoring and training athletes that was multidimensional, as well as developmentally and training-age appropriate, (4) integration of technology with analytics plan along with education on application of the data collected, (5) injury epidemiology to help improve preventative injury practices, (6) overseeing the scientific evaluation of transfer of training between athletic measurables and on-field process metrics and finally, (7) identifying biomechanical determinants separating minor league and major league pitching talent, injured versus uninjured athletes, movement impacts on key process metrics and how variability in movement affects health and performance. -
Player Performance CoordinatorLos Angeles Angels Jan 2017 - Oct 2018Brought in to oversee Minor League Strength and Conditioning Programming and create an evidence-based process that formed a rubric for scouting amateur athletic talent and scaling talent in comparison to an existing professional population. As part of my role, I assisted the Major League Strength and Conditioning Coordinator in both coaching and performance science. I was integrated into the amateur draft procuring players and onboarding of new recruits. Key undertakings included contributing toward the development of Evidence-Based Training as method that involves the use of data to scale athletes and transition programming to improve speed, strength and relative power. I also worked closely with pitching coordinators to develop dynamic throwing programs that were scaled by age, level and citizenship and undulated workload by manipulating frequency, time, density of throwing, intensity and variation in task to reduce injuries among our minor league population. -
Postdoctoral Fellow - Penn Throwing Clinic, Department Of OrthopedicsUniversity Of Pennsylvania Jun 2015 - Dec 2016Greater Philadelphia AreaConducted human performance research to improve neuromuscular function, movement mechanics and overuse mechanisms of injury for athletes, patients, and clinical research populations at the new Penn Center for Human Performance. Initiated the Penn Throwing Clinic providing service to pitchers in assessing musculosketal deficiencies and flawed movement profiles through 3D motion capture for Penn Medicine. -
Mlb Assistant Strength Coach/Roving CoordinatorBaltimore Orioles Feb 2012 - Nov 2014Baltimore OriolesAssisted Brady Anderson, VP of Baseball operations in adding scientific context to a revolutionary training method involving Olympic Lifting and iso-inertial training, providing both private and semi-private training by 4 Major League strength coaches. Career highlights included being part of a 2012 playoff team, working with a series of athletes who made All-Star appearances (Adam Jones, Chris Davis, Matt Wieters) and experiencing Chris Davis's record-breaking 53 homerun season. Significant research undertakings involved training epidemiology, calculation of relative and absolute strength metrics through developing a proprietary application to aggregrate key performance entries and was the roving coordinator when the Major League team went on the road to ensure training was consistent between the MLB level and minor league teams outside of the Florida complex. For more information, please see the following link: https://www.mlb.com/orioles/news/new-workout-facility-has-baltimore-orioles-ahead-of-the-curve/c-42249936 -
Biomechanist/Exercise PhysiologistUniversity At Buffalo Sep 2006 - May 2013BuffaloRadar gun velocity in baseball is not an accurate way to assess pitching fatigue, as compensations can go unnoticed that drive up loading of the elbow and shoulder leading to injury. My particular focus was on movement compensation of the lower body (altered 3D kinematics, kinetics and joint powers) in the baseball pitching delivery and modeled mechanisms of fatigue and their impacts on arm health and competitive outcomes. -
Volunteer Assistant Baseball Coach And Strength CoachUniversity At Buffalo Sep 2006 - Jun 2008 -
Player Development StaffSt. Louis Cardinals Apr 2008 - Dec 2009Jupiter And BataviaI was hired to be the organization's short season strength coach, stationed in Batavia, NY. In 2008, we had won the New York Penn League Championship under legendary field coordinator, Mark DeJohn "DJ", and had 7 MLB players on our team. In 2009, I served a second short season at Batavia, but was also invited to Florida to serve as an Intermediary Rehabilitation Strength Coach focused on return to performance aspects for injured athletes. A key analysis involved the examination of short season pitching workload on fastball velocity performance demonstrating that velocities can actually accumulate with advancing throwing workload in a piggy-back system. As a result, radar gun readings at short-season levels may not be most accurate to determine functional fatigue.
