Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 is just the first step in a long remediation process. We've got to pull 100s of billions of tons of CO2 out of the air to reverse years of unmitigated emissions. For this we need to rapidly deploy negative emissions technologies (aka 'carbon dioxide removal') that permanently store CO2. This mean finding massive cost reductions and profitable business cases. Proper execution will save millions of lives and trillions of dollars.I've built a broad background in CCUS (carbon capture, use, and storage). For my PhD, I used CO2 as a valuable reagent, instead of valueless waste. Specifically, I developed methods for sustainable cement production that relied on mineral carbonation to both use and store CO2. I've written about CCUS for BloombergNEF, highlighting the costs, challenges, and opportunities when used for industrial decarbonization efforts. It's clear that CO2 is waste and needs to be treated as such. Reduce first, recycle if you can, and manage the rest. Each presents opportunity. Preventing catastrophic climate change requires commercial routes to permanent CO2 storage. These solutions lies at the boundary of innovation and economics. Exploring this intersection, we will reveal the most economical routes to CO2 removal.
