Ryan Woolley Email and Phone Number
I am a technology leader with over 20 years of experience and deep expertise in modern network hardware, protocols, design concepts, and the business of interconnection, telecommunications, and data centers. At Walmart, I am the Sr. Director of Network Architecture, where I lead design for all aspects of networking, including stores, data centers, distribution, and e-commerce.I previously served as Head of Infrastructure Architecture at application security provider Imperva, where I led delivery of a new PoP architecture that was a contributor to Imperva’s recent $3.6bn acquisition by Thales. Prior to that, I was Director of Network Architecture at Netflix where I guided development of their global backbone and new CDN PoPs to support 7x user growth and the company’s transition from relying on third-party CDNs to in-house delivery systems. In addition to my work, I volunteered as Chair of the Board for Community IX, the largest member-owned IX in the eastern US, where I built two IXPs (FL-IX in Florida, CIX-ATL in Atlanta) from the ground up. I also previously held leadership roles with NANOG, including Chair of the Program Committee.

Head Of Network InfrastructureImperva Jul 2021 - Apr 2024Atlanta, Georgia, United StatesImperva was an application security provider serving large businesses and financial institutions. The company was acquired by Thales for $3.6 bn. In this role I held responsibility for network and systems architecture at 60+ locations/PoPs globally that supported Imperva’s application security product portfolio (e.g. DDoS mitigation, CDN, WAF) that accounted for $300mm+ ARR. I also served in interim leadership roles for network tooling and network security during vacancies. My main focus was stabilizing the existing network and designing a new PoP architecture to reduce outages. We successfully delivered a new PoP architecture based on modern protocols including EVPN-VXLAN, allowing for increased reliability, scalability, and maintainability. My contribution included design, leading procurement of new routing and switching platforms, and planning for retrofitting and replacing the entire existing network based on the new PoP architecture. -
Director Of Network ArchitectureNetflix Jul 2016 - Jul 2021Atlanta, Georgia, United StatesI initially joined Netflix as a network architect before promotions to a management role, and then served five years as Director of Network Architecture. During this time I grew my team from 10 to 20 members and led delivery of two critical projects (highlighted below). My responsibilities included contributing to product and strategy decisions in QBRs, representing the CDN team to the C-suite, managing vendor relationships, and leading discussions on network design and interconnection strategy with global carriers. Our largest projects included the development of network architecture for Netflix’s CDN PoPs through a period of member growth from 30M to 210M in 190 countries, as Netflix transitioned from 75% third-party CDNs to 100% in-house delivery of >150 Tbps. This involved PoP migration from traditional router platforms to merchant silicon (7x hardware cost reduction), new PoP design to capture cost efficiencies via increased cache and interconnection speeds and reduced cross-connect and space and power demands, and development of features that effectively selected appropriate paths to deliver content without interruption during network congestion. The other large project was the build of Netflix’s global backbone to support studio production, streaming video delivery, and live video delivery. During this effort we collaborated with software teams to model initial traffic demand under steady-state and failure conditions, and deployed >100 terrestrial and submarine links and interconnection with AWS that reduced transit costs. We also migrated application traffic to the backbone, which reduced application load times and resulted in an increase in member retention. -
