Ryan E. Flinn, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University of North Dakota where they direct the Trauma, Substance, Justice, and Recovery Lab. They also serve as Co-Director and Principal Investigator of the SAMHSA-funded Mountain Plains Addiction Technology Transfer Center (HHS Region 8) and the Director and Principal Investigator of the State Opioid Response-Technical Assistance for Region 8.Ryan’s clinical interests include integrated behavioral healthcare, substance use disorder treatment and relapse prevention, sexual behavior, sexual and gender identity, chronic disease, disability, and trauma-informed care. Ryan’s research focuses on leveraging recovery support services (e.g., peer support, recovery housing) to address the syndemic of trauma, substance use disorder, criminal justice system involvement, and HIV/AIDS which disproportionately impacts people with low-income and economic marginalization, people of color, and sexual and gender minorities. Ryan’s scholarship is supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse through training programs at UCLA, Brown University, Brandeis University, and Chestnut Health Systems. Ryan is active in APA service at divisional (e.g., Division 17, Division 44, Division 31) and organization-wide levels (e.g., Committee on Early Career Psychologists, Committee of State Leaders) and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Prevention and Health Promotion, the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, and The Counseling Psychologist.
