I am a geophysicist who specializes in near surface problems. My skills span from civil engineering to geology to geophysics. My current focus is an improved understanding of small scale soil heterogeneities and their impact on the electrical and magnetic properties of the soil. The application of this research is to improve the detection and discrimination of unexploded ordnance (UXO), landmines and improvised explosive devices (IED). This work involves theory development, lab scale modeling, numerical modeling and field verification of results.I have developed the Near Surface Properties Laboratory at ERDC where I measure the physical properties of earth materials. I specialize in the complex electromagnetic properties of soils as a function of frequency, density, water content, soil type, and grain size. I design and build fixtures to optimize these measurements for the specific geometry of the measurement. I also work in most other areas of near surface geophysics such as levee characterization, aquifer location, tunnel detection, environmental contaminant locating and archaeological site characterization. I have spent many years searching for clandestine burials using geophysical methods with both ERDC and NecroSearch. I have been using UAS platforms since 2013 to collect data that complements my near surface geophysical data. I have managed programs to deploy new UAS sensor payloads to map specific targets such as rapidly mapping UXO on recently bombed airfields.Specialties: I have experience writing research proposals, managing projects, and writing technical reports, conference presentations and journal articles.

As a geophysicist with ERDC I perform a wide range of near surface geophysical surveys in the field, including gravity, magnetics, electromagnetics, ground penetrating radar, surface nuclear magnetic resonance, and seismic reflection and refraction. These surveys support both civilian and military applications. I have performed field surveys over most of the continental US, and also Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. I have performed field surveys in several international locations to support military projects.Starting in 2008 I began development of the ERDC Near Surface Properties Laboratory. This facility can now measure most geophysical properties at a lab scale as a function of temerature, pressure, water content and can subsample geologic samples prior to measurement. As part of the NSPL development a custom scientific workflow and database was developed to manage all of the measurement capabilities and to ensure that the high quality data that we generate can be used by other scientist quickly and in format useful to them. The NSPL is now linked with out Materials Test Center and our quantitative mineralogy lab to allow measurement of a the entire spectrum of properties on the same sample. The potential of this facility is linking geology to engineering and geophysical properties in a predictive manner.

I went to CSM to get an MS in geophysics thinking that I wanted to do seismic data processing. I spent the first few years as a teaching assistant for AutoCAD and FORTRAN programming. After several internships in this area I decided that this wasn't what I wanted to do. I then spent several years performing field and laboratory non-linear complex resistivity (NLCR) measurements on contaminated soil samples. This was much more interesting but didn't lead where I anticipated. I finally spent a year modeling the Biot slow wave propagation through rock cores confined in a shock tube. This was my MS thesis topic and much of the modeling was performed during my summer internship at Schlumberger-Doll Research under the supervision of Dr. David L. Johnson. My MS advisor at CSM was Max Peeters for whom I worked as a research assistant.While I was at CSM I was involved with the Graduate Student Association (GSA), first as a department representative, them as the treasurer and finally as the president. After my year as president of the GSA I attended the national meeting of the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students (NAGPS) and was elected ombudsman. In this role I was in charge of hiring and firing for our paid staff in the Washington, DC office.

I spent the summer of 2001 modeling the propagation of the Biot slow wave through saturated rock cores. I used a FORTRAN 90 code written in Russia for these simulations. The goal was to see if there was any potential at detecting the Biot slow wave in actual field measurements as this would have led to the potential of a powerful new method of determining the permeability of rocks.
